I have a 1977 CB550F and it has one threaded grease fitting (6mm) in the middle of the swingarm pivot.  I suspect the fitting is the Japanese style mentioned, so I replaced it with a regular U.S.A. fitting (6mm) that I purchased at a cheesy auto parts store. 
The grease must be old and solidified because when I attach the grease gun to the new fitting, grease is force out between the fitting and nozzle.  Is there an effective solution to this without disassembling the swingarm to remove the old grease?
I don't feel any side to side movement with the wheel removed but shocks installed.  By the end of the year, I will happily send it to HM for a rebuild but for now I would like to perform maintenance and get a chance to ride it a bit.
I haven't created a thread for my project, but I am freshening up a last-plated in '88 w/ 14k miles.  After the summer, I plan to rebuild the whole bike.

'77 CB550F - going to get it top-notch, like ride across the country top-notch, like it is 1980 and it has 12k miles with a loving, original owner
'82 CB900F - my (sometimes) daily rider

These old bikes are teaching me a big boat load!  I love 'em!

Try pulling the grease fitting out then spray solvent in using one of the "straws" like the ones that come with wd40.  Shove the straw in through the grease so that the solvent gets mixed with the grease. Stick the grease fitting back in and use the bike for a few days.  Repeat every few days for several cycles then try the grease gun again.  I have had success with that on old trucks.  It is easy and won't take much time.  No real downsides if it doesn't work.  This might work better on the units with fittings on each end...

your best bet is to find an early swingarm bolt with the nipples on the ends. They grease better so when you send it in to hondaman your rebuilt swingarm will last longer. In the mean time you could put it on the centerstand and pull the bolt out and clean it then try and grease it again.

The old fashioned way. A rag and a stick. You know how to do it ,now just get down to it.!LOL,,,,ol..lol
