Yes I've got the connection in the middle of the tube also. I'm speculating that this connection is to allow you to remove the air box without removing the breather tube from the carburetor.
And yes my breather tube is routed to the top of the box, but does not attach to anyting. The funny thing is that there is a hose clip on the open end.
By the way, you're not far from me, I'm down in San Antonio.
