Never heard of a gravel road race.
What kind of bike is used?  Road bike with larger tires, or a mountain bike?

For 100 miles comfort would be important.

Used to be, actually delivered Western Union telegrams on a bicycle. The daily loop was 20 to 25 miles.  I had a very light weight Fuji and a Kabuki racer, both were stolen out of a locked garage :'(   ....Larry

I used to race a few years ago, I did road, track and crit racing, and have the scars to prove it, I pulled my left foot one day in training on the track and basically flipped myself arse up, it didn't end pretty (our velendrome is 2 coat seal/bitumen), I ended up with my left elbow ground down to the bone and over 20 smaller wounds across the rest of my body.  But I do miss doing it, work in the last few years hasn't allowed much time for training, I rarely see home in daylight during the week and on the weekends I'm usually busy around the house or with my bike.

I used to race, did long rides, one was in Utah on gravel  If you could call it that, but it was more the size of cobblestones some of it. My downtube rattled into two pieces on one of the downhills.

Luckily I had just shuttled a truck down river and was on the way back. I knew that the float party would catch up with me and I wouldn't have to walk the last 40 miles.  Sag wagons save lives.

my brother is president of the EFTA (eastern fat tire association) and seems like I get drawn in to helping every year.
It is fun to watch guys/girls on the trails.

Finally got the significant other out for a short 12 mile ride on one of the local creek trails yesterday, very nice weather for a ride.

Used to race.
I still have my liscense - Cat 1 road, Cat 2 track. Got burned out after about 10yrs.
Switched to CX for a few years but then job, kids, mortgage, etc... Now I'm lucky if I get 40mi on Sat.

Man, 100mi on a cross bike would be a prostate pounder. Next time ditch that OS ALu tubed Bianchi and get something with a bit more flex. And find some big sewups. Sewups on a CX bike make a world of difference.

Sounds like you need to drink more on the bike. And pay attention to your electrolytes.
