Somethings not right 76 550
« on: May 18, 2012, 04:58:29 PM »
Rode the bike today ...still seems like it wants more gas but will ride ok. Anyways after hour of rideing I noticed oil spewing out the top engine case. What was suppost  to be in here??? I plugged it up and rode home slowly...oil was everywhere on me and the bike...looks like oil factory.

That's your tach drive. There's a set screw that holds it in place. You can pull it out and check that the o-ring is in good shape.
Do you have a tach? Just hook the cable up....

I only have one speedo  hooked up. Why is oil flying out of it?? If I don't have a tach  set up then what?

Interesting. Should be something on here for that. Lots of people run only speedos.

You heading to miltown with your bike anytime soon?

Yes it was spraying out .... I stopped at a clinic  and tried to macgyver something.  Stuffed it with paper and wrapped with rubber band....
Yea didn't really work well. When I got  home oil was everywhere.  My shoe was soaked my pants leg had it all over.

I guess the tacho gear is missing. There should be a small shaft protruding in the tacho gear holder.
If the gear has been taken out, it will not seal and oil will be spit out of that orifice by the tacho sprocket on the camshaft.
Either put back the tacho gear or replace the gear holder with a plug that has an o ring on it.

Are you SURE it's coming from there? I see the rive for the cable in there.....and it shouldn't spray out enough oil to cover your shoe and pants.
Where is the breather hoses routed? The one from the top of the engine?

Why don't you get a can of engine degreaser, clean the whole engine and then ride it again. Make sure you know where the oil is coming from. I'd be really surprised if you're getting THAT much oil from the tach drive.
