New tire advice
« on: May 19, 2012, 07:34:22 PM »
Like the title says I am looking for advice on a new rear tire and possibly a front one to. The front is in decent shape so I might just get a rear.
I now have  a Dunlop K627 130/90-17 on my bike now and have been very happy with it, but it seems to no longer be available.
I like the look of the tire and also the performance, would like to get something similar but open to suggestions.
My bike is a 1978 cb 750k.
Thanks

Just this week bought tires for my K8, not a huge selection in that 130/90 size.
I ended up getting Dunlop D404's. Took a short 20 mile ride today and  am pleased with them. Others on this forum have given good reviews too. I suggest not buying the cheapest tire out there.

Got them at Dennis Kirk with free shipping...

Before this thread goes out of control (tire threads always go like that...........) I'll say that just about any modern "Brand Name" tires will work well on our bikes.

I love Bridgestone BT 45's, but I've also got Michelins, Pirelli's, Metzlers, Dunlops and even a Heidenau on my bikes currently. They all work great, are similarly priced and will all last around as long as each other. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Terry, the German tire Heidenau, is not readily available here in the States. As with most German products, I would bet it is a very good tire.

I also have Bridgestone BT45's, recently put them on my K4. Great tire.

Yeah mate, my recently aquired BMW has a Heidenau on the rear, I don't know that much about the bike but I believe it was a private import from "Ze Fatherland", or maybe Britain, but I'm guessing the tire was sourced overseas because I haven't seen Heidenau's here in Oz either.

It seems to work OK, there's a newish Bridgestone on the front that I don't recognise either but they work well together, the only "pants schidting" moment I had was when I was cranking into a corner and hit a small pile of loose volcanic rock that some thoughtful road worker had left in the apex of the bend for me. It wouldn't have mattered what tire was on the bike at this stage, but it just gave a little wiggle and continued on it's way.

Skinny tires don't look as cool as "fatties", but are great for plowing thru loose gravel.;D

So Terry all these tires come in a 17 in size. That was the question.

The  overall diameter of a 130/80-17 is 23.2 inches.
The  overall diameter of a 130/90-17 is 24.00 inches.

That is just a little over 3/4 inch difference. Not much.
Get it lower and fatter!!!

I didn't want it lower.

I ordered a 120/80-18 BT45 for my K4, when I received it, compared it to the existing 120/90. Didn't like the look of it, and sent it back and got the 120/90.
