Need Struts for a 77' 550k Bobber project.
« on: May 21, 2012, 07:26:46 PM »
Hello, I have started a thread on here already about turning my stock cb550k frame to a bobber, I am an absolute beginner, someone informed me that struts might be a good way to go instead of shipping my bike off to be hardtailed, however after finding some beautiful threads on line I have yet to find anyone to make me some, I'm considering ordering this 5/8 OD x .156 wall x .313 ID 1020 DOM Structural Round Steel Tube (I believe that's the best one?? according to another thread) and cutting off the ends of my stock shocks and possibly bringing them in somewhere for welding...if anyone's got any answers or options for me please let me know... thanks :)

there is a hardtail kit on eBay 125.00, you would just need to find someone to weld it up for you, I just build a hardtail bobber, was a close 3rd in bike of the month for May keep it a softail if you plan on riding it very much, also if your going to run struts IMO just kind of generic
75-550 ffsc sold, 78-550 diamonte sold, 125s grasshopper sold, 76-550 puma sold, 78-550 tracker sold, 74-550 verde diablo Sold, 74-550 Noemani finished trying to sell. 72 500 hartail in the works

I found the universal hard tail kit, it is tempting, but I wouldn't know where to start, I think I'll keep on looking for someone to fabricate my some struts, or better yet to build a hard tail for me.. :/ sigh

I don't do Hardtail's for customers but struts are easy.  Just weld the old shock fittings onto a length of pipe.  Struts can be made longer or shorter.  A hard tail is forever.  I like to use the old shock fittings so I can retain the rubber bushings.  A strut, or hard tail bike can be ridden for many, many miles without discomfort.  For me, I think it is the adrenaline numbing the pain........ :)
