Carpy?
« on: May 21, 2012, 12:17:50 PM »
I thought I'd ask a possibly controversial question. I've only been on this site for four years now but I've never seen any posts by Carpy. Did he used to post here? I would think so since he mainly works on CB750s and would likely have a lot to offer but I've never seen anything. My guess is he somehow got upset with someone or something here but I was just curious if anyone had any history. Not trying to bad mouth anyone.

Registered as "Carpy". Last active Sept 2011. Not so long ago, but ... no need to post here. Plenty of business without the grief.

I've given him plusses and minuses. On his own, he just gets plusses.  Completely understandable.

I have seen him a post a few times.  I think the last time might of been a product issue?
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I don't think he likes to be questioned a lot. That doesn't happen here, does it?!
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Yeah, I don't think he likes to be questioned from what I could gleam.

I'm sort of inclined to agree.  The guy does for a living what a lot of us would like to do, and sometimes that frustration spills over.  OK, his taste isn't yours and you don't like gold plating - fine, don't use it.  You think his website is ostentatious and irritating - fine, don't use it.  I've dealt with him a handful of times, by email and in person, and he's always been super helpful and on the ball.  Granted, I'll take help from anyone because that's what my current skill level dictates, but some people are willing to give it, and Carpy seems to be one of those guys, just like lots of you here.

OK in my books (and no, I'm not painting my bike gold).

...... He was out front of this cafe racer explosion and should be recognized for that regardless or people's personal opinions of him.  In 10 years when the cafe craze is over I fear Mike Seate will be recognized as the "king of cafe racers" and Carpy will have been forgotten.

i really hate to admit it , cuz me and Steve had it out and i really dont care for him at all ... but this is a very true statement

...Carpy was a pretty stand up guy at first ... he would talk to you as an equal , then he started getting money and doing ..."odd" things

like thread jacking someones build to spam about something he was doing in his shop ... he'd get really offended over the smallest things, like if someone didn't like his style ...  and most of all he'd talk about his builds like they were the pinnacle of CB engineering (hearing someone toot their own horn gets old ..fast) ...      ...for the most part nothing too excessive ... just arrogance .

He used to post here alot.  He would post new builds and lots of stuff.  He was a regular forum member.  This was also before he started selling lots of parts.  He was mainly a bike builder when he posted here.  I think he gets a raw deal, just my opinion.  When he was first posting here people were excited by his builds but somewhere along the way he started getting criticized (fairly or not).  He was out front of this cafe racer explosion and should be recognized for that regardless or people's personal opinions of him.  In 10 years when the cafe craze is over I fear Mike Seate will be recognized as the "king of cafe racers" and Carpy will have been forgotten.

Scott

I think I saw one of his (Carpy's) bikes in a magazine a while back.  Maybe a checkerboard looking scheme?  I've never talked to the guy but it must be nice making a living doing what you enjoy.  And hopefully he got some gloss from the magazine folks...

I want that +2 swingarm he sells.

I have only emailed him once. He replied. He did his job.

He sells a few items I want. Good for him that he has made a life for himself with what he likes to do. And has a cartoon YouTube video talking about him.

I think if someone creates their own "brand" they become very protective of it. In my opinion his percieved arrogance comes from doing what he does very well and believing so much in what he does that anything else is viewed as sub standard. Personally, I respect what he has done for the cafe racer scene, and my dealings with him have been very helpful. He also puts a lot of stock stuff that restorers are in need of up on ebay at decent prices from what I have seen.

He doesn't sell anything I want, but the fact that he makes a living working on bikes puts him in select company.  Being a bike mechanic and/or builder is the adult male equivalent of wanting to be a princess, astronaut or pony collector.  There are about 10 times more people trying to make a living off bikes than the average western economy can support.  Good on him.

Yeah, but I wish I had my own magazine.  Unfortunately for me, no one will buy a magazine about ratbikes, poor mechanic skills and and the drinking of lots of cheap beer.

Sorry, thread hijack.

I've watched a couple of the episodes and don't like it. It's all over the place, I can't keep up. I think I read somewhere that Seate has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.

I subscribe to the Mag and DVR the show because I love the bikes and most of the personalities.  The mag is ok but is always chocked full of typos and generally poorly edited.  But I like the content so I will keep supporting it :)  I like Motorcycle Classics more FWIW but they have a larger budget/staff.

Is there beef between Seate and Carpy?  I can't for the life of me figure out why he wouldn't be featured on the show or have a sidebar in the mag or something.  I talked to Carpy once on the phone and I have nothing bad to say about the guy.  He builds some beautiful bikes.

On a side note, I am kinda surprised that Benjie's hasn't had any mention in the show or magazine either.  Maybe you have to advertise to get editorial?  It shouldn't be that way but sometimes it is...

Oh, I wondered who the dork was when I watched the show once or twice. God that show sucked sweaty, old man balls.

Your rag idea sounds better than most I have heard, I would buy that for a dollar good sir.
