Is Mike a member here? Seems like he has a rather large hate following. And at the same time seems to get good jobs. I guess there are always two sides to any story.

That's for sure.  You'd think he spends his spare time going around kicking people's dogs.

Some of CRM's features on newer builds aren't half bad from a streetfighter perspective.  What I don't understand is the cockroach-like ability of the "Cafe Racer" brand to withstand being done to death over and over.  It almost seems like he's piggybacking an interest in street custom builds on a well-known, bankable term that has currency right now.

But he's done it, and you haven't.  And neither have I.  I'm not into the mag or show, so I don't buy it or watch it.

As someone who's earned the odd and infrequent dollar writing about bikes, I respect the ability to earn a living from it.

I think Carpy falls prey to what happens to many people who become prisoners of their own success.  He's a motorcycle mechanic who used to answer his own phone and created a name for himself.  He never claimed to be an expert at marketing, web forum decorum etc. etc.  I mean just recently his webpage went from being a rambling mess to a professional looking site.  He no longer has the time with everyone pulling/wanting something from him and doesn't want to expose himself further.  There's no upside for him posting here.  His infamous thread hijack would have gone unnoticed if he was just an overexubrant newb but because it Carpy it becomes and international event.  I mean look what happened with RocCity, he exposed himself and becomes a target even if he feels he's justified. Carpy plays up his heritage to feed his brand, I don't see anything wrong with that.  His bikes are often show bikes meant to impress and have lots of eye candy(especially the ones that get the press) not be an innocuous daily rider.  I imagine I would fair little better and make just as many mistakes if I had his gig.

I think I read somewhere that Seate has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.

Can you expand on this?
I will try to find it and post the link. It may be on here or dtt. But again what's posted would be here say and there is always 2 sides to the story. On second thought I will pass, I wish I didn't put that down. Totally Outa charactor and I had a bad day. Not cool .

Carpy I'm sure is a nice bloke but he still polishes turds which makes him a turd polisher not a publisher or high end builder. There is only so much you can do with a turd and it will still stink in the end. Hey, but they are nicer and more interesting turds that captures the attention of a mid-level audience. This is NOT meant to diminish Steve's ability as we can only do so much with what we got to work with! He has MUCH more ability than 95% of Honda SOHC4 guys do. High end is nice but it's VERY expensive and there just isn't a sustainable market out there. That and try to continually find the parts! Hell, if you're in this as a business you gotta make money otherwise it's an expensive hobby and you gotta get a damn job to boot. I will state that I am not a customer of his and probably will not be. I just don't see it!

Is there beef between Seate and Carpy?  I can't for the life of me figure out why he wouldn't be featured on the show or have a sidebar in the mag or something.  I talked to Carpy once on the phone and I have nothing bad to say about the guy.  He builds some beautiful bikes.

On a side note, I am kinda surprised that Benjie's hasn't had any mention in the show or magazine either.  Maybe you have to advertise to get editorial?  It shouldn't be that way but sometimes it is...

I dont know the story behind Mike and Carpy either.....but think there was a falling out between them somewhere. At one time Carpy had mention something to me about the show, being part of it and asking if i'd be interested in becoming involved.....and I never heard anymore.

I've talked about this before over on DTT....and how I think there are a few key players in this new Cafe Racer revival that should be recognized by the Cafe Racer show, which up to this point have had no mention at all. I remember in the late 90s, early 2000s with the coming of age of the internet.......there were only a couple guys on the internet with web pages dedicated to the cafe racers. Those being.....Carpy, Benjie and myself(Ohio Cafe Racers). These were the days before the discussion forums......and all 3 of us emailed and discussed our bikes and builds. With the arrival of Ebay.....tons of parts were easy to get and we all started expanding our builds and experimenting with the old bikes. Once the forums took off........things went thru the roof. Seemed like overnight the cafe racers were gettting more and more popular. I can remember talking to avid motorcyclist about my cafes and 90% had no clue what a cafe racers was. Now.......pull into any bike night, you are bound to see a cafe racer and most everone knows what it is.

There is a reason this new explosion in cafe racers has happened and maybe showcasing those who helped bring it back to the mainstream motorcycling public would be nice. I dont know if i'd be interested in being involved in the show......or if Carpy or Benji would either for that matter. But both Carpy and Benji have done some dam nice work with cafe racers......and I dont think my stuff is too bad either(insert biased opinion  ;D). They were regular guys.......taking old worn out vintage bikes....that no one wanted.....tearing them apart/building them in small garages......into completely new and beautiful machines. That really needs to be showcased, maybe not on Mike Seates show......but somehow.

I have no doubt that if the bottom fell out of the industry tommorrow, Yourself, Benjie and Carpy would still be building bikes in the back of a shop somewhere.....

You can tell me I'm full of crap, you certainly wouldn't be the first,  but I prefer to think that there are a select few that have managed to make a few bucks (big bucks in some cases) because their hobby happened to surface as a mainstream commodity and I won't point a finger at anyone for taking advantage of that. The optimist in me chooses to believe that we create opportunities for ourselves. If we don't capitalize on those chances when they appear, someone else will. And some will just #$%* because they didn't get to be a part of it.......

My vote for the next evolution in mtorcycles iiiiissssss......"Spikeybike Industries" The motto would be something like "I can build you a cop magnet for under $500.00"
