New to me 400F...
« on: May 21, 2012, 02:40:53 PM »
a friend of mine, faced with no room in the garage, just couldn't sell his beloved, but neglected 1975 400F to anyone...so I volunteered! I promised much polishing, and attention...It worked, he is going to be so damn jealous he let it go...

I have a local one man shop in North Haven CT, Steve @ Conn Cycle Works who specializes in 60,70,80's Japanese, and I gave him the green light to do what is necessary, and correct to put it back on the road, while I cleaned and polished...he put about 24 hours into a very thorough going over to bring it to depedable and presentable...with 2 Moto Guzzi's with 32k and 75k in the garage I already have plenty of wrenching to do...very glad I went to a professional...she now snaps to attention and idles like she means it...even looks pretty, but a 10 foot pretty...only 500 miles so far, but loving every minute of it...a perfect contrast to the Moto Guzzi's

I have a specific question...my sidecovers are without the 400F emblems, and I have new ones ready to be applied...it seems to be a rub on affair (but I don't really know), but should these also have a spray clear coat also?

Any info on reapplying these would be a big help, and I'm just dumb enough to try anything stupid and regret it later...save me the trouble and let me know how to do it right. Thanks.

First off, welcome and congrats on getting a 400F. [I want one!]

Since you did not post pics, I will assure the emblems are vinyl and just need to be stuck on. Take your time, measure and apply. Use painters tape as a guide, if needed.
I did not clear coat over them on my 550F, but a lot of guys do, especially if it will be out in the weather.

We love pis here, so post up.

Hey! Congrats on the 400!...I now have a 400f for about 8mos...and a 79 Guzzi 1000SP I've owned for 20 years. I to am struck by the contrast of the two machines...the guzzi all vibes and lopey at idle with it's NASCAR/airshow warbird thing...and the Honda with it Isle of Man /Walter Mitty thing going on...how light the little CB is...not that the Guzzi is ponderous or anything....Anyway...hope you enjoy the two bikes together as much as I have...It's almost as if I enjoy the Guzzi even more now that I can turn in a whole 'nother direction with the CB...Italian THUNDER...or Nipponese pocket rocket...I never suspected that just having the choice would enrich my motorcycling as much as it has...CHEERS!!!

I put new decals on a few months ago when I repainted. If they are like the ones on Ebay you put them on with water. Mine came with a sheet explaining the application. Let them dry and clear over them. I waited 8 hours. They are very thin, I don't know how they will hold up without being cleared over.
