NEXT BIKE-----> BUELL or MONSTER ???
« on: June 13, 2006, 08:46:25 AM »
Gentelman ,

I have made the decision to keep the CB , and pursue another motorcycle to add to my "fleet". I am def. not a sportbike / Hyabusa guy, nor do I want to spend the cash for a HD. I have narrowed my choices to either some sort of Buell or a Ducati Monster.

Both have that "streetfighter" feel to them, which is what I like. If my decision was based on looks alone, the BUELL would win hands down. I am trying to get the best of both worlds, as far as looks, comfort, and reliability. The last thing I want is for this bike to be in the shop more than I get to ride it.

So, anyone have any input ??

You have a lot of italian charm to choose from: Do a google search for MV Agusta Brutale, Bimota Delirio, Benelli TNT or Moto Morini Corsaro...

Pro,

I test rode a Buell XB12Scg a little while ago at my local dealer.  That bike is wicked fun, however, I wouldn't be able to afford the speeding tickets.  I also test rode a Triumph Speed Triple what a sick ride, I almost bought it.  However, in the end I bought a SV650 and it was a blast.

I love all of the bikes listed so far. As far as Buell goes, I get all tingly thinking about that Ulysses. Good street bike plus it will keep going when the road ends. KTM has a couple of cool bikes too. Haven't read any reviews on them though. Maybe worth a look? http://www.990superduke.com/

That is the  Buell I would end up buying, if I do indeed "pull the trigger" so to speak.
I just love the industrial looks of the buells, and with a few "tweaks" could be a totally badass scoot.
Will have to be black, so I can withthe black and silver / stainless theme..
I am gonna sneak over to the local Buell dealer tomorrow on lunch and get a test ride in real quick , and talk some numbers...

I hae also been tossing the idea around of picking up a Triumph Thruxton. Wicked little bike, cheap, etc...But I cant get past the look (& sound) of a Buell....

Pro,

I was quoted on a XB12Scg out the door @ $10K and I didn't even work the sale.  IMO you can go lower.

Suzuki SV650 all the way. It was cost as much as a buell or a ducati and will just as much fun. Huge user community at www.svrider.com I have a 2005 SV650 as my other bike and I love it. It's a v-twin so plenty of torque on hand in any gear but not as unrealistically fast as a 600 super sport machine. I would highly recommend it. If you can find a used one they cost around ~3000-~5000 depending on the year. A lot of guys buy old ones and race them so I don't see as many used up in Cleveland but they are great bikes.

Have you though at all about the honda 919?  gobs of power from low rpms on up, classic honda look, and you can get it in flat black.  two tires, a motor and a headlight.  nothing extra on that bike.  i love the dual exhaust pipes as well.  oh wait, buell or monster? definitely the monster.

buell, hands down, nuff said.

ducati's are cool and all, and just the sound of the dry clutch is enough to cream myself(for some weird reason), but they are a PITA to keep running, plus you run the risk of being meshed in with the pretentious #$%* class of riders.

plus with the buell, if you ever get tired of it, buy a hardtail frame and build a bar runner out of it

I'd go with the Speed Triple.  A true streetfighter and bad ass looking to boot.  I wouldn't give the motor company a single dime, just my opinion after all the issues with my brothers HD initially.  Not a monster fan.  sorry.  Good luck with whatever bike you buy though.

Do you like to tinker? Do you like a low insurace cost? Do you want plenty of power? Do you want it cheap?

I do.

Therefore I bought a 1989 FZR 1000 very cheaply. Found a NEW 1993 engine (also cheap!) and slung it in.

Built a new subframe to carry the 916-rear end made some risers to take the MX-bars.

Ducati 998 brakediscs (not in these pics) and R1 brake calipers also fitted the budget.

Made a seat out of the same type of foam-material that roadracers use.

A bicycle-computer let keep track of my speed as i cut off the stock speedo.

Twin-Bates up front.

Makes 138 rwhp on the dyno with a slip-on, an open airbox and some tinkering (there it is again..) with the jetting.

Price?

A fourth of what a new Buell or Monster costs (at least in Sweden) and practicly no costs in running!

So, go ahead and build a streetfighter!

Raul

If you like the Buell XB's there is no reason you should not be checking out the Brutale aor TNT. In my opinion there is not a cooler style right now then the street attack look that the XBs, brutale, TNT and likes bring to the table. I was in made love w/ the buell look tell a month or so ago when I saw a MV brutale in person w/ the stock headlight replace w/ a triumph dual light setup. Flat out when I have money that will be my bike. My goal is the brutale w/ a dual headlight setup and buel like exhuast... oOOOOO sexy..

I am also not a 100% on this but if you get a buell make sure you know where you can and cannot get it serviced. To my understanding HD and Buell are splitting in one way or another but none of the local HD dealerships around kansas are going to continue to sell buell.

Wow.  You stay busy don't you?  That FZR looks like something the factory would put out.

I really like the looks of the Buell.  Don't know how big you are, but the Lightning seems really cramped to me.  Not much legroom, and the bars come back at a strange angle.  They're making a "Lightning Long" edition that's based on the bigger new Ulysses chassis because so many people complained about the old one.

Also, the Aprilia Tuono is a pretty good Ducati alternative.  Rotax builds their v-twin which is supposed to be pretty reliable.

I am just a smidge under 6'' tall, and of a medium build, so the longer Buell will prob. fit me better.
Like I said I am planning on wasting some time tomorrow at the local dealer taking a few different models for a test ride and see which fits me best....Gotta be black, thats 4 sure...

As far as the SV650 comments go, I just cant get past the look of those bikes. I dig the riding stance (rode 1 before), dig the led taillights , dig the price, just cant get past the look of the thing..My 2cents..

I am def. leaning towards a Buell at the momment...
But keep the feedback comming.... ;D

Well the Buell would stop the shunning at Harley dominated rides for once. Both bikes have thier high points. And as far as I can see the only weak point they have is no custom faces  ;D

I just got off the phone with my good buddy who manages Chicago HD. He said that Erik Buell himself is trying to distant himself from HD, and become a fully indenpendent manf, with his own motors and such. The current Buell motor shares very little with the sportster (skirt-ster) motor it was modeled after. Mr.Buell is a very smart man, and I think is ready to go out on his own. I was also told that even if Buell splits from HD legally, the dealers that sell his products now will almost 4sure continue to service/sell his bikes...
