The other day while going nuts over my carbs not being perfect I thought about how cool clear carb bowls would be.  This does not seem reasonalble as plasitic is not safe and could break down with gas.

A carb sight glass plug may be the next best thing.  Holley carb uses this and compressors and other machines use sight glass for oil / fuel level so how hard would it be to drill and tap a carb bowl and screw one of these in?

nah...just stick some clear tubing on your overflow tube or in where your drain screw sits(depending on the bike you have), hold the tube up next to your bowl....and turn on your fuel. 
instant gratification no drilling necessary.
and only $.50 spent on tubing.

I thought about something like that too.  I envisioned a small slice in the side of the bowl.  It would be sort of like a quart size container of oil... how it has the see through verticle strip on the side.  But yeah, it is kind of simple to use the tube.  And I don't have enough bowls to destroy anyway..

The slice it ideal, but I can't think of a way to make that work this seems like it might be possible.

I used those sight plugs on a Holley years ago and initially they worked just fine however the gas in the bowls eventually made the lens haze up making them useless. I'll stick to the tube method on my bike.

Thanks for the insight!  I am still interested more as a tool for setting float height.  I am not sure how to use the tube properly.  How high should the gas go anyway?

And I genuinely hope someone reading this thread answers that because I asked the same question a few months ago and nobody gave a clear answer in regards to how high up the side of the bowl or how far below the base of the carb should the fuel level be if the floats are set properly. As it stands now I set the float height on my 550 to 22mm then use the tube method to make sure all 4 carbs actually are at the same level with each other but for all I know I may have 4 carbs with the fuel level too low or too high.

I did however spot a post where someone here came up with a clever idea of threading the clear tubing into the carb bowl without having to modify the float drain screws. I'll see if I can spot it again and post the link.

we need someone with the skillz to make a glass mold of the carb bowls and do a glass mold injection

just dont tighten the bowls up just enough not to crack the glass and its money

Yeah that would be sweet!  Cost maybe be high bad enough the oil sight gages are 7 to 10 a piece for a 16mm.

I see no need for it.

The float bowl material is very thin and it expands and contracts.
A potential source for another leak.


The older Datsun B210 float bowls had a sight glass.

isnt that what the gasket does? i didnt know the float bowl itself expands and contracts...........

I think the plastic tube method is plenty good enough for the one-time-a-year ya might wan't to check float level... otherwise it's a case of O.C.D. ( Obsessive Carb Disorder )..

Hilarious!! I think I got at little O.C.D.  Now if only I can find a CB750 support group I will be on my way to recovery.

ya what he said!! also make it for a 550

All you have to do is by a new float needle.
Set the float with a float gauge and thats it you are finished.

Can you snap of a pic of the right way to use the gauge and where the measurements are taken from.
