Hello, first time Honda owner here.
« on: May 22, 2012, 02:06:36 PM »
Hey all, I recently picked up a '73 CB500 Four for my "daily rider."

The thing runs great, only problems are the #3 carb is leaking like a SIV out of the bowl... Question: Will these gaskets work? It says they're for a 500K? Well... the site said I'm not allowed to post external links. So... they're on PartsNMore's website. It says they fit a 500K. What is the K designation, and will they fit my carbs?

And my other problems are the front brake is rubbing. I take it I need a rebuild kit for the wheel cylinder?

Lastly, My starter solenoid is shot... I don't really care as I'm used to kick starting but I would like it to be operational. Where can I get one?

Thanks in advance. This site is a great tool and wealth of information on these bikes.

Welcome.
First thing is download a workshop manual. There are links on this site. Do a search   ::) The usual search is broken at the minute so use the google on the left.
CB500K is the model of the bike. It has four cylinders  ;D
As for the brake, disassemble and refresh everything is a good idea if you want to know you can stop.
Is the carb leaking or overflowing? Carbs can "leak" for a number of reasons, let's narrow it down. Carbs may need a thorough cleaning depending on how used the bike is/was.
You don't have enough posts to post external links.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Thanks Lester, I downloaded the manual.

My leak is coming out of the the top of the float bowl because of a bad gasket.

So a '71 is a 500, a '72 is a 500K1, and a '73 is a 500K2?

That site with the float bowl gaskets claims the gaskets are for a 500K, there are parts for 500s... then 500Ks separately. I would imagine Honda used the same carbs on them all three years?

I'll get some pictures once I get it put back together, I have half the bike apart right now.

This should help as far as models are concerned.

Alright, got the model designations figured out. Got my new float bowl gaskets ordered also. Should be here Wednesday, and I'll will be cruising.  :D

The past few days I tore bike down, stripped all of the rust and crust off of it and hit some parts with gloss black. This thing was a rust bucket.

Still to do: Rebuild front brake, wrap exhaust and get different ends, as they are ugly. Fab up some mounts for a smaller headlight, and front turn signals. Then fab up a new taillight, plate holder along with turn signals.

Then I'm just going to cruise her as God intended. Down the road I'd like to get lowering springs, some drag bars, and some Avon speedmaster tires. Other than that I'm going to keep this bike relatively stock which is a new concept for me.

Welcome to the forum.  I figure if you narrow down your location a bit closer to where you live other than the United States, you may find some hands on help local to you.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I am from Saint Marys, Pennsylvania.

Welp, got my new float bowl gaskets in the mail today. Threw them in carb #3 and 4, got it all buttoned up and was so excited to ride it as I just plated and insured it today and what do you know?! Still leaking like a bastard. Sigh.
