550 clutch frictions min. thickness ??
« on: June 13, 2006, 08:00:38 PM »
Hi guys,
Ive been trying to get my bike back on the road.  Ive done a few test rides, and the trans is hard to put into neutral, and once their, its hard to get into first or second from neutral.   I noticed that if I put slight pressure on the shift lever towards first gear while in neutral, and kill the engine, it easily slips into gear.  I've heard thats a clutch problem.

I tried to adjust my clutch, I found that the adjuster was already all the way out, and even then the marks on the case and clutch cable bracket dont line up at all.

Today I removed my clutch.  One of the guys in the shop thought my clutch frictions looked like a well known brand of clutch maker that starts with the letter B,, berrett or berent or something or other.  He thought that their minimum thickness spec is lower than the stock minimum specs.

My clymer says the minimum speck for my 1976 550  clutch frictions is 3mm.   I measured one of them, and it was 2.8mm.  What do you guys think I should do?  I have no idea if this guy is right or if this is the original clutch.  The bike has around 25000 miles.

thanks

My Shop Manual says "Friction Disc Thickness" "Standard Value 2.6" "Serviceable Limit 2.3"

This is the 500/550 Shop Manual, and the values are listed under 'Service Data - CB550', generic - not year specific.
Actually runs --> 1975 CB550-K1
