Total Eclipse Sunday
« on: May 19, 2012, 05:58:02 AM »
I'm thinking I might miss the trip to Hallet for MC races to go out to Lubbock or somewhere west of there to get a total eclipse that will be a 94% coverage "ring of fire."  It's supposed to last 4 minutes.

Kinda like one of those bucket list things, and unlike the last one it's only about a six or eight hour drive instead of a trip to  Australia.

Anyone in it's path?

If you want to see it and save your eyes, put on a pair of heavy duty welding goggles.

Here it was about 70 percent.  I used one of my vintage navigation sextants for viewing.  Due to the sextant's split horizon mirror I was able to actually see two side by side images and using the different color filters I could make each a one different color. :)

I used binoculars to project the image onto a manilla envelope. The attached pic is about the time of maximum coverage, +/- a minute, around 6:35 today.

Took some photos of the eclipse last night. First two photos shot through a red laser safety glasses. Last two taken right before sunset unfiltered.

My buddy from college took this one in Japan.  For them, it happened at sunrise.

I would like to make it to Charleston for the 2017 one. Seems perfectly close and I like Charleston :) I've never seen one before. remember seeinf Haley's Comet back in the 80's. I was about 10 or so.
