Please Help Me Figure Out What I'm Missing (CB550) PICS
« on: May 29, 2012, 07:40:37 PM »
Hello all,

So I'm cobbling together a 500/550.  Most of it is a 72' 500 but the parts I get are from, well whatever they're from.  I'm trying to get my front end together and I'm having a hard time understanding what I'm missing.

Basically, I have a wheel (cb500) I have a speedo drive, retainer ring that bolts to rotor and the little plate that interfaces with the speedo drive so the "driving" actually happens.  But I'm missing something on the hub of the wheel that lets everything get together and be happy.  I've looked at the parts diagram in my book and at various pictures of front wheels on Ebay and I can tell that there's something else there but I can't quite make it out.

Here's some pics of what I've got,

Hub

Speedo drive and parts

So, if anyone knows what this piece is and (preferably) could take a picture of it for me so I know what I'm looking for, I'd be really grateful.

If they wanted to go above and beyond and were savvy in the measuring arts, I'd love details about the item such as what the thread size is (though I can get that from my hub, just a bit easier to measure an external thread) and the rest of the parts dimensions so I can make one.

Cheers!

Hot Dog!

Good easy part to make,

Can you tell me, does that piece tighten up flush with the hub, or does it recess a little?  Or even better yet, do you have one handy you could measure if you're able?

Thanks!

If you feel like making something then make the special tool it takes to get the retainer off. I'm sure some members would buy them. I hate banging up on parts like that. If they get stuck they usually look pretty ugly by the time you get them off the wheel.

yes i regret taking off the retainer that way but..... ow well

i got smarter and used a vice with drill bits and physically spinning the wheel to unscrew it. i did this for the back wheel worked like a charm i shouldve done this for the front one too but didnt figure it out till later  :(

Just what I was thinking, seems like any spanner wrench with the correct size pins would do it.

Sorry, suppose I should have added more detail.  I'm grafting a CBR front end onto my bike and I want to use the stock front wheel (spokes rule!) so I'll have to make spacers.  I need to have the speedo drive assembly attached to the front wheel so that I can determine what size I need to make the spacers in order for the front end sandwich to come out tasty.

Build thread,

Before I would put the retainer in,  I would consider new wheel bearings.  Getting the retainer out is the hard part so you are half way there.

Way ahead of ya, bearings (for front and rear) are on my workbench, just haven't gotten there yet.
