Wide Band O2 ,Tuning made easy
« on: May 24, 2012, 01:41:43 pm »
For those that don't know, a wide band gives you your exact afr, not close like a narrow band but exact. This makes plug chops/reading seem like the dark ages, sorry to all the plug readers out there.

After selling my last car along with my Innovative LM1 wideband I have been wanting to get another one and something smaller. These have come way down in price in the last few years making this even easier to justify. I bought an AEM gauge wideband from Ebay.  I used an old acid stained muffler and welded a bung to it and connected the two wires. In one 3 minute ride I now know I am too rich (11.8-12:5) at cruise between 4-5k rpm. Too rich at WOT under 4000 rpms, It dips to high 10's/low 11's for a second as it stumbles, I knew I was rich but not how much. WOT from 7500 - 10,000 is pretty perfect at 12.7-13.2. I am a little lean at idle but if I richen it up my bog at 4k is worse. It has been a year since I did the carbs but I think I set the floats 2mm too high. I will try dropping them back down and then see what my WOT 7000 rpm+ looks like.  I will throw the POS pods that came on the bike this weekend and see what that shows first.  I remember the bike being not so user friendly at lower revs with them. For those that like to tune this is a must have.

AFR looks good but the choke was still on some

Yeah you should have never sold your lm1. I've been waiting to buy one for a while.

You know, I loved the LM1 and used the S out of it. When I bought it, it was the only wideband available on a hobby budget but was still pretty expensive. It did a great job but was big. The AEM has one user configurable output for data logging, one less than the LM1 and does not need a free air calibration. Something that the LM1 needed quite often.  I'm not saying not to get an LM1 but if you don't need all the features there are better deals out there.

All good unless you just spent $1200 on a new 4 into 4 exhaust system .... not exactly wanting to drill holes in it. lol

No,
If all of the cylinders are relatively the same, the data from one exhaust will give data you can use for all of the cylinders.

I got the Dynojet model and love it.

It sure beats the heck out of plug chops, and lets you see what's happening in different circuits as you ride.

I haven't used the datalogging yet as I don't have a laptop, but I guess I can just remove the box and bring it to my PC for downloads.

Haven't figured how to program my TPS into the box yet!!
