Trip to Yellowstone in June, recommendations?
« on: May 25, 2012, 10:40:41 AM »
Just like the title says kiddos, i will be taking a jaunt to Yellowstone with my wife and her pops to see the sights and sounds of the national park.
Plan was to drive up and stay at Cody for a night, drive in and stay a few nights in Gardiner, drive through and stay in jackson a night before driving out.

Any recommendations on things to see places good to stay, good food etc? Never been, so this will be our first time going.

1. Good barbecue in Cody at Bubba's. I didn't have any other memorable meals around Yellowstone, but you don't go there for the fine cuisine.
2. You'll love the drive from Cody to Yellowstone. It's desolate and huge and beautiful.
3. If you have time, I highly recommend driving the Beartooth Pass. It's just outside of Yellowstone (Northeast) near the town of Red Lodge, Montana. It'll probably take most of a day but it's worth it. Wear warm clothes.
4. I don't remember how far it is from Jackson, but the Grand Tetons are worth a look, too. Enjoy the trip.

Jackson Hole is a cool place to spend the night. I have pictures somewhere of me under the antler arch in the park and at the Silver Dollar Saloon. Oh and the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar also. I recall a resteraunt where you could bring in your own alcohol and they had good food (might be Alice's but I'm not real sure). Anyways....have fun in Wyoming. It's a great state (like nowhere else on earth-- thats what their entry sign used to say).

Don't leave any pic-a-nic baskets around.  The Ranger doesn't like it when Yogi get into them.

Mesa Falls on the idaho side is a good waypoint just on the west side of the park if you end up that way., and is incredibly uncrowded compared to Yellowstone, seemed like there was plenty of camping spots open mid summer.

DAMMIT, beat me to it.  What he said.

If Yellowstone is all full, do not settle for a Jellystone park of any sort.  You will be very disappointed.

My best friend lives about two hours  away from the park on the east side in Bridger MT.  Lucky to live so close to so much natural beauty.

Forgot to mention Chico Hot Springs about 30 miles north of Gardiner.  Historic hot springs resort that could be an alternative to Gardiner.  Good restaurant and a casual bar and grill, wide assortment of rooms, as well as hot pools for soaking at the end of the day. It's a bit more respectable than back in the day in the 70's when we were going there smoking pot and drinking to excess in the hot pools. ;D

Damn, you 70's leisure suit wearers soaked up all the fun and left us with nothing.

I have visited a couple times in recent years with my family. I regret not taking a little time for myself and renting a ride for a couple of days. There are Harleys available in Billings, Harleys and BMW's in Jackson Hole.

We had a forest fire blow up in front of us. It changed our travel plans a bit, and put us into the nicest hotel on our trip, The Cody. I'm not a luxury traveller at all, but it was very nice and reasonable too, if you consider that it can be about $200/night to stay in the park. We made all our reservations at a late date, by phone, when the online bookings showed no availability.

Inside the parks:
Old Faithful Snow Lodge - nice  :)
 Lake Lodge - OK
Grant Village - a barracks with a bear dumpster view  :(
Signal Mountain Lodge - nice  :)
Outside:
Grizzly Lodge - Silver Gate, MT - :)
 The Cody -  :)
Togwotee Lodge -  :) - out of the way

I can try and make it up to you. ;D  If you want to do some trout fishing I can turn you on to a spot on the Yellowstone very close to Chico that has easy access.  We always fish it when in the area and never come away empty handed.  I will check with my friend about water levels.  Have always fished it in August and September and waders where all we needed.  Not sure about June.

Yummy rainbow, I don't know if it would be worth the hassle of getting all those stamps and permits for a couple of hours of fishin'.
