ok guys here we go.............help and input needed
« on: May 16, 2012, 07:43:12 PM »
ok first off the bike when i got it for $100 my first motorcycle I have always loved the older honda cb line so i am very happy........BUT AT THE SAME TIME I AM NOT because i love honda cb cafe racers and i also found this bike under a tarp that had been over it for 6 years out in the elements....

so first thing i did was attack the title situation very hard thing to do but i have title so now i will stark working on it. so first thing i did was pull airbox out broke it to pieces and cleaned carbs.... put them back on and nothing cleaned up the points and i had life it starts and runs but not good and will die if choke is taken off.... so i take it to a guy to fix and he says i need stock airbox so i got a new one.....bike still has same problem please help......

second thing...... all the wires in the handlebars are now cut but as you can see i am going to eliminate the turn signals....if anyone has any input on the re wiring to make this easier on me plz feel free help i am realizing i am making allot of stupid decisions... but it is my first bike and first budget build.... i know there allot of stockers in this fourm (and i really like the stock bikes to)  i hope you guys like what i am doing with it. ;D

Pull the bowls off the carbs and unscrew the idle jets and clean them very thoroughly.  Blowing out with compressed air really helps here.   The main jets just press in and are partially held in place by an o-ring.

hondabikes,The wires unplug......save yourself the headache, don't cut them anymore . So,are you going to hook up the kill switch and starter button? The wires are colorcoded and almost every one of them plug into the same colors in the bucket except for the brown one that is left over for a parking lamp in Europe. Solder the wires back together ,seal them, and protect them with  tape , if you want to delete your blinkers, go into the bucket and unplug your light blues and your orange then go under the seat and do the same there. Unbolt your lights and put them on the shelf ,if you need them for inspection or sale bolt them back on and plug them back in. Makes life easier.

If you shoot PB Blaster down the handle bars first, then feed it slack fron the center hole , a slight tug on the control as you go, the wires will come out easy.   To install, 3feet of wire taped onto the wire ends, slip the lone wire to the center hole ,pull ans feed, pull and feed.

yeah, hondabike - the best thing you can do is to not just jump in headlong.  there are manuals on the forum that you can download for your bike -- a good 1st step is to read through it.  it isn't hard and will give you at least a super-basic understanding of your bike and the different systems.

from there, tackle one decision at a time.  start with something easy, like going through the wiring harness and cleaning the contacts one pair at a time then greasing them with dielectric grease and reconnecting them.

slow and steady gets it done with motorcycles. i just spent 4 long weeks of beautiful riding weather reassembling mine.  it was torture to take so long, but every time i hurried i'd end up making more work for myself!

you'll get there!   :)

u should check out my build thread. im a college student. on a budget btw.... spent $500 on the 550 and im probably $1k ontop of that.....

tell us more what you want to do with this bike?

are u just trying to get it up and running as fast as possible or are you stripping it down and building it back up?

if you want to just get it on the road u have to do some simple things

first fix all the wire you or the PO cut. this was a mistake! u can buy the bullet connectors online and just get that harness back up to stock instead of changing how everything else connects to each other u should just get the bullet connectors again and make the harness fit like its supposed to.

since this bike has been sitting for 6 years.....

take off the front forks and rebuild them and replace the seals. ur front forks are probably really squishy or locked up depending.

rebuild the master cylinder because brakes are good

rebuild the front brake caliper piston and seal.

replace brake pads

take apart the rear hub clean it out and replace the brake shoes.

change the oil and filter

new battery

new tires

new chain

replace spark plugs and possibly caps

check tappet gaps

point gaps (just replace these. dont bother using old points. they are cheap and abundant!)

timing (this is very important)

clean out the tank. shack it, tip it upside down drain it out and get all the crud out

check ur cables, throttle (push and pull), clutch cable

is the throttle tube good or is it all cracked up? if so replace

honestly i would go through the carbs get a rebuild kit and rebuild it. or u can just try to clean it the best u can but might as well they are off just rebuild it. i would hate to put everything back together and then try to sync the carbs and notice a jet is still clogged or something

sync the carbs

then when u get the bike running put 1/3 can of seafoam in a full tank and this will kinda clean out the inside of the motor

optional things
replace the wheel bearing
replace stem bearings with tapered bearings

what other problems or things do u want to do?

stay focus on getting the bike running.  then decide what you direction you want the bike to go, or let it decide its own faith, based on your budget and time.  download the shop manuals, parts list manual, and do lots of reading (just keep reading even if it don't sink in your head, happened lots of time with me lol)

focus on these:  fire, fuel and air to get the bike running (seems like i'm missing something here)
