Can't get the 550 to start now
« on: May 25, 2012, 10:10:34 AM »

I got the plug  for tach ... installed, put in oil   that was low.  Now I can't even get the bike to turn over. I tried at first and after some futzzin  It was running ..had to keep on the gas for  bit.  But after two clonk outs its not wanting to turn over anymore.  I had the cholk  on ..was futzin  with the screw I think its the idle screw under the tank but nothing.  Yes the gas is on.  I have a brand new battery inside so that's not the problem.   Seems like I need to turn it off completely for lil  bit then it has the juice to do some force at least but then after trying to mess  with it...it dies and won't turn over
..I can hear  a hummin  sound coming from the bike just no turn over.
76 550
Anyone have any suggestions to help me? Im just so frustrated  now with this damn bike ..not funny anymore

Batteries, STORE power, they don't create it.  When it is empty, it must be refilled.  I don't give a F@K if it is new, when you drain the power out of it, the voltage goes low and it can't run the bike, particularly at idle.

It can self recover a little bit as the chemicals move about inside during a rest.  But, it won't last long.

You had to keep it on the gas so the alternator would make more power than the battery.  If you do that for 10 hours, the battery will get recharged.

Charge the battery.  Preferably with an off-the-bike charger.

You should be cursing yourself, not the bike, imo.

If you keep grinding away on a starter you can ruin it.

There is a cooling down period required after each attempt to start the bike, to give the starter a chance to cool down and to let the battery recover.

Off the bike; meaning sitting on the counter or floor with the battery charger plugged into the wall and left on for an appropriate number of hours.  I have a unit that can be switched between 2 amps charging current(like a trickle charge), or 10 amps for a faster rate or deeper discharge, or even sixty amps to get the bike started when the battery is too low.  Be sure to read the instructions and precautions and hondamans book about voltage regulators so you don't fry a perfectly good battery with too little caution.

hope that helps.

I usually take the safe bet and trickle charge it for 24hr if time allows. No risk of overcharging it.

"Trickle" means different things to to different batteries.

Trickle charging the standard 12AH battery that the Cb550 normally has, means something in the 750ma to 1 amp range for a charge rate.
Trickle chargers for auto batteries that have no voltage sensing capability will cook off and damage motorcycle batteries.

What you really want is an automatic charger or a battery tender, intended for motorcycle batteries.
Like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Yuasa-YUA1200901-Smartshot-Battery-Maintainer/dp/B000GZL29M

This charger is a three level charger, meaning it has a recharge mode, a peak charge mode and maintain charge mode, that it switch between automatically.

The Deltran Battery tender Jr. operates in similar fashion.  But, it has a lower, but acceptable, charge rate, and less LED's to stare at.

Why did I even bother explaining about trickle chargers vs tenders/smart chargers?
1 amp trickle chargers are not "smart" and will cook your battery if left on too long.  Now you will need a voltmeter to tell you when to disconnect it when it reaches 14.5V.

If your battery is indeed depleted, it will take 10-12hr of you monitoring it until it's fully recharged. Less, depending on its beginning state of charge.  This activity is about as fun as watching paint dry and tethers you to the set up until complete.

Talk about messed up...
Oh well... I'm done...

its crazy how much I stuck into this bike.....I never would have thought id spend this much on it. And im no middle class income base person ..3 lil  kids and my lower income makes the money spent on this  project alot to me ..I don't think I will be doing a another one for a while  after this is finally done.  I will not sell the bike though...im going to give it to my younger son who's 3 now ...he can have it later down the road.

I see you really put a lot into it, maybe you got yourself a little over your head with this project. Hindsight is really 20/20, but for the money you dumped into this thing, you probably would have been better off getting a nice runner. A good runner would give you a better opportunity to learn about these things, and enjoy riding it at the same time. The most important thing with any bike is safety, your up on two wheels, and a failure at any speed could be really bad. These are really simple, reliable machines, like most Honda products. Everyone is here to help, but it might not be a bad idea to get a good bike mechanic to go over everything for you. You probably got 90% there, but sometimes that last 10% is a pain.

Having a good battery is a must and a given imho.

And as to the costs... your not only paying for the parts but also for the experience of understanding, assembling, and tuning all those parts together like a symphony. ...again imho :)

understandable everything you said. When I bought the bike it was running good, the motor was good,  I ripped around on it for lil  while just getting used to it.  I looked at few bikes before this one nothing really good and nothing what I wanted.  I just don't know much about Carbs and older bikes... I wanted one of these bikes and I guess I have gotten it at my price if I may say.

Got it to start...I had It charged full and cleaned the spark plugs really good.  Took lil while but finally started up. Problem is now its running rich still and the Carbs need to be synced.  I hate messing with Carbs...I hate them  so much
