Choosing a muffler
« on: October 29, 2012, 08:33:30 PM »
I have a 1975 cb550f with a 4 into 1 exhaust. I have no idea if it is stock or how to tell. The muffler attached was this. I would like to attach something smaller that would serve the same purpose however there seems to be very little information in general when it comes to choosing a muffler, either that or I'm extremely bad at using the internet and this forum. Can I choose anything as long as it fits my exhaust? I've seen that glasspack mufflers are short but I've heard they tend to be loud because fibreglass isn't as effective at sound muffling. Any help would be appreciated. If I should just keep what the PO had on let me know. Thanks.

This link should answer your question. Looks to be that it is an after market. usually there is some sort of marking... with a brand name on the muffler.

The original appears to be a different shape all together.

Thanks free booter. You seem to be right. The stock 4 into 1 has a very different shape. The length of the "1" where the 4 join together is much shorter on the stock. Now that I know I have an after market which btw has a diameter of 2 1/2 inches, can I choose any short muffler I like? Or are there things I am missing that need to be taken into consideration?

I have some old Hooker pipes (yeah...its a brand) LOL...I wanted to use some after market mufflers (reverse cones) you can go to almost any auto parts stor and find steel adapters that go from a multitude of sizes up or down to another size and just fit them. I had mine welded on since I had to hacksaw off the rotted bits of my old headers to get a muffler on.

I am running second hand Mac headers, but the muffler insert eventually rusted and fell off :)

First I replaced the insert with perforated pipe, but it was too loud and the wife complained every morning I rode to work  :P

So I made a new muffler that is little bit more quiet, I stil would like to change the cross plate with one with smaller holes to muffle it little bit more, but this one actually does not sound bad.
