Author Topic: Bartels Oil Tank Mounting (Read 3717 times)

I have seen quite a number of these tanks in gallery machines, and one thing makes me curious: what is the accepted way to mount and securely fix the tank in its place? I have seen a number of machines that have mounts only at the bottom (unless I've missed the upper ones..), some with add-on braces on the top that side mount to the upper frame rails...etc.

What is the recognized and approved (m'Lord?) method of securely mounting this tank while also making sure that vibration doesn't crack those lower mounts? And does any poster make and sell a set of ready-made mounts for this purpose?

Yeah we did this to death in a thread a while back didn't we? Spirit - there are two top mounts as well as the bottom brackets each side...

SamCR750A, it looks like you've a point there - is it just the angle or are those bolts going into the tank at the top mount threaded right into the tank itself? Or am I missing something with the bolt heads being there?

I would've thought that given the shape of the bottom mounts the top ones would have supported the tank vertically (like this 7) rather than horizontally ( like this T). What gives?

And sorry to rehash this, but perhaps there still are new things we can all learn...

They are supported vertically spirit - the top mounts bolt to the tank with the cross head screws and then rubber mount sideways in to the frame pillars. The bottom brackets are like rails that the tank sits on again with foam or rubber between if you want to limit the vibes...or are you looking at a different picture to me

I am a little interested in this as well. I have a Bartel tank set arriving eventually and will have to mount it up. I understand that Mr Moyce will include instructions/diagrams for installation with the tank.

I attached a bunch of pics of the tank mounts. I don't remember from whom they originally came -- none of the pics are mine.

Fang, thanks a lot. That puts togther in one group a bunch of views I had been looking at separately and gives me a much better idea of what's needed. I really wanted very good vibration isolation at the tank, and I think my builder can take this stuff ane we'll brainstorm a few extra non-vibe add-ons. But be warned: I am also thinking about a set of aluminum side covers as well....

Fang: re your mention of Mr. Bartel supplying notes to be used to create the needed mountings for the oil tank - please share them, since he made no similar offer to me!

Has he also shared the Honda part number of the approved fuel tap as well? More to share!

Not to act out of turn, but since Fang has been so kind as to offer to share his Bartel-provided plans for the additiontal mounting brackets for the CR oil tank and also the Honda part number for the Bartel-recommended fuel tap, might it not be a kindness to him for an SOHC4 poster to provide said plans and number so he might have them in advance of his reciept?

Just sayin' here...

Thanks Spirit. That's thoughtful of you, but truth is that even with the plans available, I will need to have the tank present to correctly fab up the brackets and mounts.

Besides the brackets look easy, and I'm moooving real slow.

I'm thinking of adding rubber to the lower tank mountings as well, since it seems to make sense to have a cushion supporting the tank from the top and the bottom for street use.

Spirit, although I didn't do the bracket work on the bike in my avatar, all the mounting points start with the front gas tank mounts. When your new tank is offered to the front mounts and the seat is offered to its rear mount, this will determine where the tanks rear mount and the seats front mount should be.
Once tank and seat are in place, you can then figure where the oil tank will fit in relation to the cut away in the seat for the oil tanks filler. The top mounts can then be figured followed by the bottom mounts, remember to leave room on the bottom mounts for your bottom cushioning.
Another point to note, glue a thin peice of rubber mat to the rear of the tank to protect it from small stones that might be thrown from the rear wheel.

Thanks for all the tips! I also appreciate the one about protecting the back of the oil tank from spall. As a street machine I will be sure to look after that. I am also planning on some kind of sidecover, by the way...
