Would you rather be BIKING or RESTORING?
« on: May 29, 2012, 08:20:56 pm »
Well, Would you rather be BIKING or RESTORING?

assuming that if
-your location permits riding all year long
-you have all garage/storage space
-you have all tools necessary to do the job
-you have money to spend on your bike
-you have money to spend on gas to ride
-doesn't matter of your marital status.  your wife (if married) lets you do either, or both.  if you're single then things are easier
-so, biking or restoring?

I have a 82 900F that I just finished painting the frame and most of the small bits. I am putting it together now and expect to have it shaken down and ready to ride to Barber this fall.

I have a 67CB450K0 which has the frame hanging, fresh back from powder coating, and almost all the recoverable parts sanded and Painted black or primed. Some parts have experimental paint color on them while I decide on the proper silver color.  The motor sits waiting for me to disassemble & restore.  I expect to be chasing parts for another year.

Riding is most fun with friends but often difficult to co-ordinate, restoring just requires walking into the garage.

I now commute on my 750 or Vulcan most days which has improved my riding ratio considerably.

I worry a little about the "restoring" option, while I've restored several bikes, "restoring" isn't as important to me as just wrenching on my bikes to maintain them, so that my riding experience is all the more enjoyable. I voted for the "Both" option, but I do a lot more wrenching than I do actual restoring, although I suppose, literally, fixing something is "restoring" it back to a servicable condition. Cheers, Terry. ;D

For me, Biking vs. Restoring is a draw.
Wrenching is wonderful, but comes in 3rd. :)

I tell people I am riding a rolling restoration. Each winter I do something else to improve it. This winter stem bearings and maybe swing arm bushings. Frame touchups I consider normal maintenance.

Got to have at least one on the road! Benefit of multiple bikes in the shed! Always got something to restore and ride simaltaneously. Some days I just want to play in the garage, others I want to be out on the road. With winter drawing in, I will be spending more time wrenching and less on riding. It helps to have 2 projects so it never gets boring.  ;D

Well I only have one bike and it's a bit if a basket case (in terms of its looks) but it runs great! So I'm going to go with riding, then wrenching. But then again I'm 26 if that means anything!

Although I live in NYC so winters are definitely spent wrenching.

Up until last year the only thing I didn't like about motorcycles was working on them. I dropped three bills and bought the Harbor Freight lift and it was like getting my first kiss! Now I invite my friends to bring their bikes over for me to work on.
I've been an avid RC model airplane builder and pilot for the last 15 years, my airplane buddies are feeling like widows for the last year or so because I split my shop time between bikes and planes, my weekends are split the same way with riding and flying.

Geez mate, if you're an RC aircraft pilot, how the hell do you manage to climb up on to the seat of a CB750? ;D

Wrenching is all right and restoring can be great fun as it all comes together and you have something to show for your time and effort. But riding is what it is all about. It gives purpose to what otherwise would be an inanimate object.

I hear you Greg, I'll have the last of my bikes registered on Monday (my CB750, ironically) so all 5 of my bikes will be legally registered and insured. If a bike is just parked and not ridden, it may as well be a statue. Cheers, Terry. ;D
