1973 CB500 carb leaking woes.
« on: May 29, 2012, 05:56:40 PM »
I see there are a million carb threads on here, and didn't want to start another but I'm kind of stumped.

I just put in brand new #3 and #4 float bowl gaskets as they were leaking terribly, and after I got it all put back together... it's still leaking terribly.

Gas appears to only be coming out of the float bowls. Where do I go from here?

Thanks in advance,

-James

Those circular o-rings are a real pain to get in correctly.  I personally like the scotch tape method.  Holds it in place and then you get it just loose enough to slide the tape out while the gasket is still secured.

By the way, if you are having leaking issues out of your float bowl gaskets it would seem that your fuel level in the bowl might be a bit too high.  You might have to investigate a float level that is off.  I will assume that the valves are properly cutting off fuel since you did not mention anything about leaking out the drain tubes.

I used super glue in spots to keep the ring in place.

harisuluv- Thank you for the information, I'll have to check the float levels when I get it torn back down today.

Also check your overflow lines. If the level is that high it should be overflowing out of the proper line not leaking around the bowl gasket.

Superglue can work but needs to be used very sparingly.  Too much and then you don't have a gasket seal anymore.

A lot of times the overflow drains can get clogged.   Anyways, sounds like you will figure it out.
