Well, maybe.

From what I've read, the companies must contract with their own independent labs and affix a DOT label before importation and that by doing so, they have made the claim that they have the helmet has passed the DOT standard.  I've never seen that they actually "approve" anything.  This is one of the complaints about DOT which Snell is supposed to take care of, since DOT essentially relies on the honesty of the manufacturer.

But then again, I might just have read between one too many lines.  Does anyone know different?

Interesting - I'd assumed DOT was a federal standard tied to federal lab testing - much as the FDA works...

Actually, for drugs testing, the FDA sets the standards that the companies must meet:  The company runs their own trials and submits the results to FDA for approval. (That's the particular government machine in which I'm a cog.)  FDA does do their own independant testing, but it's usually to validiate compliance, or to develop standards.  We don't actually do clinical trials to evaluate effectiveness.

That's the way I understand it, from reading that article. But if something happens to that helmet, where it didn't perform up to standards, then the mfr. is in deep doo-doo.

I still want a Reevu, but I just bid 500+ bucks on Dans carbs, so I hope my little chinese open face is good for another few months, boohoo! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Check out a Shoei TZR. I used to wear an Arai Signet (replaced by the Profile). My long oval head fits nicely in the TZR.

I have a long oval melon too and after searching many shopd and trying the HJC and Zeus and whatever else was under the $250 mark, cause thats all I had, I found the Shark s500s was the best fit for me. It was lighter than the HJC $#-14 and didn't have that pressure point on the forehead that so many other ones had(for my melon anyways) It also had I beleive is ECE standard on top of the DOT. The sales guy told me that this is the standard they use in Europe. Could've been a sales pitch but the sticker is there. My question is how tight should the cheek cushions be on you cheeks? The sales dude told me I should be able to bite the inside of my cheeks when biting down. This seemed a little uncomfortable for me. So I went with one size bigger. It doesn't move around on my head even when looking back at 110+ KM/h. so I figure I'm good. What are the thoughts on how tight.

Sounds like a weird test to me also. Even in a minor accident, you might be seeing an oral surgeon at least. :-\

No, I got it in the Toronto area. I'm really pleased with it. I remember seing a website for it but don't remember off hand. I'll check for distributors. So I guess I shouldn't be nervous wearing this thing and not having my cheeks meet my eyelids... ;D.

im at the same stage that im pricing out skid lids before i get my CB on the street and have looked at the various prices debating just how much i can justify for something that im going to be relying on to protect my head in the instance i lay it down or something and given i can justify paying around $400 at least for 5 point harnesses in my car if i install a roll cage i figure i can justify paying the same if not a little more for a lid. Its a matter of finding one that fits right..
