71 Cb500 oil temp. sensor question!
« on: January 21, 2015, 10:11:56 PM »
Hello everyone!

I just recently signed up to this forum because i just purchased a 71 CB500 and 75 CB550 as well as 76 CB750. I wanted to first start with the 71 CB500 everything is almost stock on it besides the exhaust and the jets in the carbs. I test drove the bike and it does need a good tune up and the engine refreshed b/c there are some minor oil leaks!
My question is i wanted to install a oil temp sensor and i notice that the motor has a few Galley plugs, and i wanted to tap into the one that is on the right side underneath the motor next to the oil pan? I did notice there are oil channels and was just wondering if i use that as an oil temp plug with that affect the oil flow to the engine, because the oil sensor is some what long? I had my father machine a plug or me that take replaces the galley plug so i can install the oil temp sensor. I have some pics so you have an idea what i am talking about. Please Don't be to harsh on me i just want to know if i can use that galley plug for my analog oil temp. sensor. If anyone as a better solution i am all ears.

Here are some pics of my 71 CB500 and 76 CB750! I bought both CB500,750 from the original owner you can see it on my trailer loaded up and ready to go!

First of all, welcome to the forums.  Those are some beautiful bikes.  It looks like the two you bought from the same owner were very well cared for.

As long as the temperature gauge doesn't go down that oil channel and block the flow, you'll be fine.  A lot of people put an oil pressure gauge or oil temperature gauge exactly where you're referring to.

in times long ago, this galley plug used to be available as after market part with threaded hole to accept a temp sensor. Mine is  fitted with one of these
