Messed with my carbs yesterday... results...pics
« on: June 14, 2006, 11:02:05 AM »
Gentlemen,

I am becoming obsessed with my bike, I can’t just leave it alone.  I bought the 1972 CB750K2 a little over a month ago.  It was in pretty good shape; it started with a full choke, but would stall until it was really well warmed up.  It would idled a bit high of 1000 RPM.
My carbs are actually from a 1978 CB750.  The carb outer bodies were loaded with grease, oil, and road grime, so I figured that the insides would look not much better.  I was wrong, the innards were pretty clean.  I dismantled the carb set (my first time, wow, what a learning curve), I soaked all the metal parts in Yami cleaner and wiped and scrubbed away until they were near new again.

Then came reassembly…. Not easy!  I was confused as hell about the way to assemble the choke shaft because of the springs and how much tension they should have wound into them.  I think and hope that I set them back together correctly.  Time will tell.

Here are a few pics:  Let me know if you see anything that may be incorrect.

Thanks

...yep, the 77/78 carbs are a bear, but IMO they are very reliable once tuned correctly.  Your's look good....and yes, the choke spring is a mug, but I can usually get it within 5 minutes...thats after rebuilding 3 sets...  ::) Oh, but the bowl gaskets are the worst, they never want to seat right!!!

Where did you find carb rebuild kits for a 1978 CB 750?

I have search high and low and can not find them...

I have a 1978 CB 750 K4 Honda and these kits are pretty much all that require before kitting the streets...any info greatly appricated

(yes, I have seached the forum...I am searching again now...in hopes that I missed a link or some advise somewhere....)

Thanks for your help SOHCers!

there's the link to the kit (UK)

Do I really need all of those parts? My friend is telling me to only order the gaskets and O-rings...what do you think?

I always buy from sirius off Ebay...

...FYI you can also just by the bowl gaskets if the rest of the parts look good...

oh, and sparty, what did you paint your carb bowls with?

bite the bullet.

you could clean all the jets and needles and such and just replace the orings, but it's a lot nicer to just soak the bodies and put all new parts in.  it sucks, i know, i just dumped 20/carb into mine, but far nicer results with much less work. would you rather get it all back together and realizes that your float needles are still crappy and leaking?
i love babies...
with a nice chianti sauce and a side of fava beans

Guys to answer your questions:

SKTP,
My kits came from my Honda dealer.  I paid about $100 bucks for everything.  Not cheap, but good stuff.

Lumbee,
I didn't paint the carb bowls or any parts of the carbs.  The PO must have.  They look powdercoated to me.

Like cmorgan said, you are best to bite the bullet and spend the money.

later,

http://www.motorcyclecarbs.com/CARBURETOR_REPAIR_KIT_HONDA_C_P8101.cfm

are 1978 K8 carbs the same as 1978 K4 carbs? (I have the K4)

Sorry I seem to have highjacked your thread Sparty...but thanks for the help!

edit...apparently there is no 1978 K4? I could swear it say K4 right on my bike...apparently is a K or an F in 1978...either or...

Hope that you newly clean carbs run perfectly Sparty...I'm abou tto venture into carb territory for the first time very shortly

SKTP,

These guys know there stuff.  If they say the stuff is good, they mean it.  My kits were probably the same stuff at about the same price.
