Wheel Vibration?
« on: May 31, 2012, 06:35:00 PM »
Today, I went about 8 miles down the interstate, hit some traffic and slowed down for a while, and then sped back up to about 60. Once I got to 60, I noticed that at intervals of about 1 second, there would be a vibration in the front end (felt through the bars). It felt like I was running over 4 small bumps right in a row. I just air up my tires two days ago. What could be wrong and how can I fix it? It is makes me nervous.

Well, I can be of only limited services but maybe get the ball rolling:

1) Wheel balanced?  Wheel true?
2) Steering tube bearings all there?  Greased?  Properly adjusted?  In good condition?
3) Swingarm pivot in good condition?  Serviced w/ a greasing?  Any play side to side with wheel and shocks removed?
4) Forks straight?  Proper oil level in each leg?

Those might get you started.  I am just starting to ride my 550F daily and working out the degradation from neglect.  I have some front end wobble and I don't like it one bit.  I do, however, really freaking like this 550!
Current Bikes:

'76 XL350 - just picked it up, will be my forest road/camping machine
'77 CB550F - going to get it top-notch, like ride across the country top-notch, like it is 1980 and it has 12k miles with a loving, original owner
'82 CB900F - my (sometimes) daily rider

'74 RD350 - 6k miles, straight out of a barn, waiting for restoration

These old bikes are teaching me a big boat load!  I love 'em!

i would probably check the wheel bearings in the front wheel first. of course it could be a combination of the things already mentioned also. looks like a front end shake down is in order.

Why would it start all of a sudden?
