My 550 only starts in neutral, is that the norm?

There is a clutch safety device which only let's the bike start in neutral or with the clutch pulled in.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Even with the clutch pulled in it still will only start in neutral? Could something be wired wrong?

Could be. Are there wires connected to your clutch lever, close to the cable adjuster?
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

The device may be missing or disconnected. It should be found under the left side panel above the fusebox. It is a small black rectangular block with two wiring connections.

Inside the left leaver fulcrum, there is a micro switch.  I've had mine fail before.  Mother Honda still has them (at least they did 2 years ago) and are easy to replace.

To test the switch, trace the wires from the leaver to the headlight bucket.  Disconnect the wires.  Put an ohm/continuity tester on the two wires from the switch.  When the lever is pulled in, the tester should change from open to closed (or closed to open).
