taking out the oil pump?
« on: June 01, 2012, 08:21:30 PM »
So im getting ready to take the engine out of the 750.Got the bike mostly stripped down.I took the exhaust studs out and took the oil pan and pump out.Iv got these engines out before without taking the oil pan off,but its ruff.Im hoping the extra inch or so will give me what i need to get it out easy....But im worried about the oil pump.am i going to run into any problems?does the pump need to synchronize or does it just bolt right back on?thanks,

It might need primed when you put it back on. Also may need to replace some seals? I have a new gasket set maybe someone else can advise if I need to replace any o rings on the pump or anything?

Ah ok.Well i got the engine out.It was ALOT easier to get the engine out with the pan and pump off.Got it out in less then 15 min.The pan didnt have a gasket though.Just some silicone crap.

Did you see any bits of silicone laying in the bottom of the pan when you took it off. That stuff can be bad news when or if it starts floating through an engine. The little jets that control oil to the head can become clogged very easily resulting in some severe and expensive damage.Do not use any when putting it back together.  ;)

Yup. I got a 'versa' gasket kit for my motor. Has pretty much everything except the 6 rubber pucks under the cam towers

The pump does have a gasket. It comes in the Athena kit and in the kit Cycle x sells. I'm not sure about Vesra. The gasket goes between the pump body and the casting that contains the screen , check valve , and high pressure relife valve. The 3 o rings that seal the pump to the engine come in most kits but the big o rings that seal the pump rotor covers don't. They
measure 2 mm x 46 mm. There is also a seal in the pump that isolates the scavenge side of the pump from the engine supply side. It measures 11 mm x 15 mm x 3 mm. Hondaman and others have posted on this seal before. It's not available as a 750 part from Honda but can be ordered as a Goldwing part. Western hills Honda lists it as part # 91208-MN1-771. Search for it as a GL 1100 part in the 81 model year.

my 'vesrah' kit lists an oil pump gasket as well as an oil pan gasket. I do not believe it has the big o rings you're talking about either though.

How necessary is it to prime the oil pump if you've pulled it out and it's got nothing but air in it? When I'm assembling the engine couldn't I just put a good quart of oil in the bottom of the case or whatever submerges the pump and leave enough room in the oil tank for it?

Air in the pump is VERY hard to get out once installed . Prime the pump before installing and keep the engine upright untill you run it .

Ok. I'm going to be changing my car oil in the next few days do you think it would hurt to prime it with the old 5w-30 out of my car? lol I'm not at the point to purchase the MC oil I'll be running in it yet. I'll be doing an oil change shortly after the initial start up and break in.

You may be joking but at least buy a qt of cheap new 10-40 to dunk it in.Use the rest in your mower or something or dunk and purge it in some of the fresh oil that will be going in your car first..

kk. So after I prime it I can't turn it upside down? Dang the only real way I'm working on that part of the engine is with it upside down I don't have an engine stand. hmmmm I'll have to figure something out. Not only that but going back into the bike, the motor is going to have to be laid on its side to get the frame over it. Lots of complications there!

Ah ok good to know.My pump didnt have a gasket. The o rings are small.About the size of a dime.I dont know what the parts are called but they go around the 3 bushing type thingys in between the pump and the case.

I dont understand whats so hard about priming the pump.Wouldnt it prime itself if you kicked it over a few times?(without starting)

Well, not if all the oil is sitting in the oil tank and there's nothing but air in the oil pump, it wouldn't suck anything.

The oil pump gasket is only necessary if you disassemble the oil pump, not recommended. Otherwise its just the 3 ORings.

Priming, just set it in a pan of oil. Turn the drive gear till you see oil come out of one of the openings i forget which the manual shows.

had it been run anytime recently or is it 10 years doemant?

Ok cool.I didn't take the pump apart.Sounds easy enough.No.The engine was seized up and the oil was super black and sludgeified..The tags said 96.So i'm guessing its been over 10 years since it ran.

b.ball +1.... asking questions here and admitting you don't have a manual is akin to a Protestant admitting they haven't got a Bible  :D :o

That's what I was concerned about. The pump's got that old oil in it so I'd want to get the old oil out. Priming will do that.
