early tank should fit.  I recently bought an early bike that had a 77-78' tank fitted and it worked fine so I can't think of  any reason why an early tank wouldn't fit a 77-78' bike.  However, although the tank mounts work out the same, the 77-78' tank is longer and interferes with the early bike seat.  Also, 77-78' seats are hinged on the other side compared to early bikes.
If it works good, it looks good...

+1 on that. My kid wanted the seat from a 77 750F on his 73 750K and we ran into the same issues mentioned above. The 77 seat wouldn't work as is because the 73 tank was shorter than the tank from a 77 F plus the 77 seat hinged from the left side of the bike while the 73 seat hinged from the right side. In order to make it all work we had to use a 77F tank which when using the rear rubber mount from a 77 went on just fine and I had to switch the hinges on the frame to make the 77F seat work.

I don't know if this applies to the 77K seat but when using the F seat I had to use the grab bar from a 77F as well and that meant lengthening the rear ears of the frame where the 77F grab bar mounts  a few inches as well. As you can see it can be done it's just there is more to it than simply switching 1 tank and or seat to another.

I think the tank length issue is only on the F, I have a 72 tank that fits on my 77K with no clearance issues with the 77K seat. At least from what I remember, I put it on to see if it fit. I didn't run it like that.

Pat - I've seen a pic of your bike, it is a K model.  The K7/8 tank is bigger than the previous model.  As already stated, the earlier tank will fit, but most likely leave a gap between it and the stock seat. Are you planning to use the sock seat?
