Hello and thank you!
« on: May 24, 2012, 11:53:16 AM »
Hey guys, my name is Alex, I'm from Chicago and I just purchased a 1978 CB550K with 8500 miles!

In the two days I've owned the bike, I have taken it around the block for a half our or so each evening, in anticipation of my license exam and riding gear purchase.

Last night, I pulled up to my garage, shut off the engine, and took a few photos.  When I went to restart the bike, it wouldn't start.

I hear the start motor spinning for a bit before it stops whirring, and I noticed that the turn signals don't blink, just get brighter.  Googling around these forums, I came to the conclusion that it might be a battery issue.  I don't have a volt meter on hand, but took it to Advanced Auto Parts where the test reported the battery's voltage as 11.85V.  They kindly offered to charge it for me, and I'll be picking it up today after work.  I will also purchase a 1.5amp battery tender then, as well.

So as part my introduction, I'd like to throw out a question...is it in fact the battery that's the cause of my woes?  Seller gave me a receipt that states the battery was replaced in September 2010.  It is an Interstate Cycle-Tron 12N12A-4A-1 battery.  Am I going to come home with my freshly charged battery and be pleasantly delighted or hugely disappointed?

Thanks for the wealth of knowledge you guys share here every day, and thanks in advance for reading about my problem.

More than likely the battery. As you only took it for a couple of short rides it probably didn't get enough revs to charge it. It more likely would have started with the kicker.

Welcome and nice score.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

The problem might be because you need to turn the lights off when parked.  :)

Nice looking bike!

Oh and you want to keep the bike at about 3k rpm's (or more) while riding for a bit to charge that battery.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Thanks guys.  I assure you, if there's a rookie mistake to be made, I will make it.  I'll just try not to bug the forum about it.  :)
