running cold on 2 and 3 (970cc build)
« on: November 16, 2018, 08:44:06 PM »
I built a 970cc bobber, which I have a previous post about it but I've encountered a new issue. I'm running cold on cylinder 2 and 3 (100-180), 1 and 4 is 270-290. It's not carb related, because I have mikuni 2 into 4, so 1 and 2 are on the same carb. I have the powerarc optical ignition (from cyclex), the coils, wires and plugs supplied by cyclex for the ignition, installed as per instructions. The cam is a kenny D cam, degreed pretty close to the numbers on the cam card. I've removed both 2 and 3 plugs, put them to the engine and got good spark on both. My thought is the timing is off, but I have no idea how to adjust the optical ignition. Any help is much appreciated. It turns on as well after some effort, so plug wires are definitely correct. Also, do I need to run a VOES switch with this build? I have never done one of those, so it's pretty foreign to me.

Cylinders 2/3 are served by the same coil, and the same side of the ignition plate. Swap 1/4 coil to 2/3. Does the problem follow?

The optical ignitions are timed by rotating the plate until the light comes on with 1/4 set at the proper mark. You can switch between timing curves loaded by using the (I think) Brown wire? But the curve is not your problem.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. I used a piston stop and degree wheel to find tdc, and set that on the powerarc, and the tdc light is on at the correct time. I have checked it multiple times, including last night when I redegreed my cam. I thought about swapping the coils, but I was thinking if I swapped just the wires my timing would be off. But after reading that, I realized I can swap my input wires from the coil and that will work. It's always good to have different views. I'll try that today and see what happens.
