We need RC Jr to shed some light on this

Well Jag i had a nice conversation with Russ Jr.  The gears in the R.C. angle drive are not off the shelf parts.   :( :'( :'(
I'm gonna visit a gear manufacturer close by me and see what the cost would be to have some of the small shaft helical gears made up.   :o  ::)

At some point, you have to ask if it's worth the effort just to eliminate the wasted spark. Consider also that it adds a significant amount of weight and complexity, and all that weight is hanging off mounting points designed to hold a tin cover. If you want the look, use it as a points cover. ;)

Gotta go with the look and the use of distributors or magnetos.  Especially with high boost or high compression with exotic fuels.  Don't want to be like everyone else.    ;)   As for the weight factor,  I'll just loose some weight to compensate !  LOL !   :o

Well i had a nice visit at the gear manufacture.  The main engineer wasn't there so i have an appointment in a couple of days to meet with him and to discuss all of the details of making these new gears and the cost factor of the whole process.  I've learned alot about the process of making gears and let me tell you it's not as easy as you would think it would be.   :o
I'll keep everyone updated as this process goes on........... ;)

Yea i figured as much also but i was hoping that possibly the gear was available somewhere.    ::)    I took the larger gear out of the housing and WOW !   Talk about a custom piece of work.  If someone needs that gear made.......$$$$$$ !!
It has a special bearing with a snap ring and the center has a special hub that is the distributor drive that holds the whole thing together with a bolt from the outside on the bottom of the housing.  Alot of work and calculating went into this setup.
And that was all before the computer programs and cnc machines !   :o

Seriously, I was hoping it was an off-the-shelf part as well, but I couldn't find anything close. :(
I made a straight spur-gear once, as a machining class exercise, on a horizontal mill with an indexing head and a special cutting tool, and was told even then that it was a half-assed way to make a gear, suitable for repairing antique tractors. A helical gear is a LOT more difficult to start with, and, by the way, it has to survive at 10,000 RPM. :o

Spur gears are fairly simple, not really a hard job.. I never used a CNC or computer to do it.
Helical though needs a univerrsal mill, and a geared dividing head, a lot moreg complex..

A  buddy of mine  just got a universal mill, but no geared dividing head..

Beautiful engineering Jon, I'm a bit worried about Tom Cruise though, he's really showing his age since Mission Impossible! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

They look VERY capable.. Interesting site, liked the photo gallery..'

The gear for the distributor is a lot simpler than much of what they make.. but will probably carry an aerospace price..
Just turn the distributor in line with the crank..ahed or behind the motor, then drive it with a belt.. like the magnetos are driven.

Joe Hunt made angle drive 750 mags, may have something...

Yea , that can be done 754 but what about all of the Honda and Kawi R.C. drive's that are out there without the drive and gear for the crankshaft ?  I'm gonna do my best to see if i can put these pieces together and sell some to other's out there that need them.   Russ Jr even wants a few sets.  Plus it gives me something to do since i'm unemployed right now.   :( :'(

Unemployed? I wouldn't touch that with a 10 Mitt pole!  ::)  Really, I'm glad my query started this attempt to bring back into use  pieces of engineering art that are gathering dust right. If the price doesn't choke my wallet, I'd want two. One I need, the other just because. Regardless of how this turns out, I want to say thanks for the effort and input by everyone. :)

Hey Jon, I'm sure we are interested in learning just what it costs to have these parts made; I know I am. I'm wondering where the cost break is; sometimes it costs the same for 1 part or 5, or 10. Please continue to keep us posted. This is your mission, should you chose to accept it... fizzz...snap. pop.

No i haven't .  I had a little stay at the hospital.   :(    I'm gonna have a visit with the gear manufacture this coming week to get an estimate on prices and what the minimum amount of pieces have to be ordered.   ::)
