Hey 754, Try calling around to some gear manufactures and get some quotes on a reversed engineered drawing on a gear. You will fall off of your chair ! Try $ 4,000.00 and up ! Also you have to remember that when Russ Collins was having these units made it was back in the 70's.
The $ 400.oo back then wasn't cheep by no means. Also i stated that they would do the reversed engineered drawing's for $1,500.00 that's at $96.oo an hour. Believe me engineering a helical gear is not that easy.
The tach drive on a cam is way different. Also it has been engineered years ago and has been produced thousands upon thousands of times so the cost factor is way way down. Its like comparing apples to oranges. Ask BIG JAY about the start up cost of anything new in low production numbers. It's not cheap.
$400.00 R.C. angle drive setup In 1975 would cost $ 1,602.51 in 2010 ! And that's not including tax and shipping !!
That's just an inflation conversion. Depending on what companies you had make the parts the cost would be even higher.
Try pricing a new Mallory duel point distributor for a say a 1970 VW engine, which is what was used in this setup. It's close
to $ 400.oo alone ! And they dont make reverse rotation parts anymore , i checked with Mallory.
Try this for your own amusement everyone.......
