Really how long does it take to make a drawing?..even at a 150.00 per hour rate, it cant take all day, and that would not amount to 2K.
I think they are clearly saying.. too small a job/numbers...for us to bother with...
Think of it as cutting the tach drive on a cam, but harder material plus heat treating, so say 3X the cost..
BUT the cams are selling for 225 bux, and probably are made 500 or less at a time.... so their quote is not realistic.
R.C. sold the whole thing, including distributor for around 400 bux.

Hey 754,  Try calling around to some gear manufactures and get some quotes on a reversed engineered drawing on a gear.  You will fall off of your chair !   Try $ 4,000.00 and up !   Also you have to remember that when Russ Collins was having these units made it was back in the 70's.   ::)   The $ 400.oo  back then wasn't cheep by no means.  Also i stated that they would do the reversed engineered drawing's for  $1,500.00  that's at $96.oo an hour.  Believe me engineering a helical gear is not that easy.
The tach drive on a cam is way different.  Also it has been engineered years ago and has been produced thousands upon thousands of times so the cost factor is way way down.  Its like comparing apples to oranges.  Ask BIG JAY about the start up cost of anything new in low production numbers.  It's not cheap.   :(

       $400.00  R.C. angle drive setup In 1975 would cost $ 1,602.51 in 2010 !  And that's not including tax and shipping !!
That's just an inflation conversion.  Depending on what companies you had make the parts the cost would be even higher.
Try pricing a new Mallory duel point distributor for a say a 1970 VW engine, which is what was used in this setup.  It's close
to $ 400.oo alone !  And they dont make reverse rotation parts anymore , i checked with Mallory.   :'(

Try this for your own amusement everyone.......http://www.westegg.com/inflation/infl.cgi

Maybe you should contact a tech school that offers CADCAM training (lathe).  A student could use it as a project.  All the highend ones can output drawings & toolpaths in a variety on formats.  Can all be saved on a CD.

Most gear info can be found in a Machinery Handbook.. once the number of teeth is counted, the DP and Pressure Angle it gets plugged into formula and is very apparent what has to be done.. heatreating and material selection, are not  mystical unknowns..

I have not cut helicals, but seriously it wont take 4 times as long in a tough steel as the 750 camshaft takes for cutting time..
Hey anyone check tooth count on the 750 cams.. BTW ?

Time to face the facts: the helical drive is not the best design. It is much more expensive to produce than a simple timing belt system. The crank-shaft drive adapter is heavy, mounts the gear far out from the end of the crank, and is held to the end of the crank with a small diameter bolt. It's not surprising that few of the crank gears survived, especially when driving the loads of a hot magneto. Add to that the reverse rotation issues, and the project becomes cost prohibitive. :(

Your exactly right Scottly.  A belt drive setup is the way to go.  Pulley's and belts are available and making a flat housing is is easy.

A Gilmor setup should be fairly easy, there's lots of parts available for them.  Would you lay the mag on it's side under the carbs?  If so, something like the filter adapter mount Terry did for my 550 would be a good starting point for a design.

As far a drag racing goes, you got room tilting forward..and many did.

going behind you want to tuck under carbs, but if you had to it could stick out..(pita).. but it may help the rotation problem..

Yes, the mag or distributor would be behind the cylinder block.  It would look like the old Bill Hahn setup.

Note:  The belt drive part can be rotated to the rear.  You can see the bolt hole in the housing below the belt and one toward the rear close to the foot brake peddle.  It's a nice clean design.   ;)

That looks a lot more doable Blue71turbo.  The 2nd one looks like just a flat plate, with a belt guard.  The hole(s) at the mag / distributor end should be pinch bolt(s) to lock the timing position. 8)

Since I started this I'd like to thank everyone for their time and effort, especially Blue Turbo. If the gilmer setup can be built I'm in for one.

Since there seems to be agreement that a Gilmore setup is  the easiest path, a question - does it still require a 'counter rotating' distributor??

From the photos posted that would not seem to be the case anymore.  Also is the drive ration 2-1?

Has 2 be 2-1... on the first pic you can see the clamping bolt relief, it is slit like a triple tree, allowing radial adjustmentand locking.

Yes Tintop, The distributor or magneto will have to be counter clockwise rotation. depending on what distributor or mag you use that will not be a problem.   ;)

Thanks, should have had that 2nd cup of coffe this morning.  When I looked at the photos again, realized it had to be counter clockwise, and 2-1. ::)

If any bodys interested, if i have some pics i will send them to you with a brief explanation what i have done. PM me if you want any info.

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I am thinking it should be 2:1
My idea was using Ducati single bevel drive parts, however its not a 2 gear system, uses 4gears to work.
It can still work with center shaft, but gets even more involved, harder to make.
But off the shelf bevel or spiral gears could work...

Is the gear for the cb750 the same as the one for the KZ1000 ?   I know the timing marks will be different but is it overall the same ?
Here is a picture of one i have that came out of a R.C. angle drive for a KZ1000.......

I have a Kawi angle drive housing  with gears, i could sell
The housing and gear look unused.
Same housing as in the pic  but milled flat where the RC letters are.
