Valve Seats for 77 750K
« on: May 10, 2005, 01:41:37 PM »
I am in need of a valve job on my 77 750.  I am having an awful time tracking down valve seats.  Do I NEED to replace the seats, I know I probably should, but I just cannot find them.  I live in the Toronto area and would appreciate any help i can get.

Thanks guys.

I'm sure the seats are OK (unless you dropped a valve or some other part take a stroll around a cylinder). Do you mean replace the guides? How many miles on the bike? I can get guides and a valve job done but I'm in Massachusetts, USA

Thank you, I don't really know the extent of the damage.  I was on the at the tail end of a 20 km highway run.  I felt the power leaving the engine about 18 km's in.  Eventually the engine just started to run really rough and lost alot of power.  I Flintstone started just enough to get the cycle home 2km's more.  At stand still the bike smelled of fuel, therefore I assume that I have lost a valve rather then the head gasket.  However I will find out for sure this weekend.  I appreciate the help, I think the shipping of my head to the States may be a little steep.  However I will keep it in mind.

...hey Chundy..don't jump the gun here...get the motor out and see whats go'n on inside.  I'm rebuilding a motor now that had a simular problem.  Had 0 compression on one of the cylinders.  turned out there was a bent valve.  Fellow chopper head gave me a valve for free and I'm back in business.  Chances are the valve guides are OK.  You need to check the compression on all cylinders before pulling the motor.  $20 for a compression tester will be $$$ well spent and save u lots of time if there is nothing going on inside the motor.

Thanks, Lumbee, I am definitely planning a compression test pre-yank.  I was actually looking for a local place to rent/borrow a decent leak down testing unit, allowing me to see exactly where the pressure exiting.  But I think a compression test will be the more practical solution.  I glad to here your bike was an easy solution, I hope mine is a similar issue.  Thanks again Lumbee.

Was there any sounds beyond that you could hear?  a rattle or what not?  I had a similar thing with my Magna, and it turns out that it ate a rod bearing.

(I live in Mississauga, so let me know if you need a hand.  I've been restoring/modifying a Cb350F over the winter.)

Thanks, for the offer.  I'm playing hookey from work tomorow to do the Compression test, and if needed take a look at the valves.  No rattling sounds, more rushing exhaust coming from the front of the engine rather then the pipe.  This is why I think a valve maybe gone.

No Power, rushing exhaust from front of engine, stink of gasoline.

So I think that a valve may have gone, and in turn blown the valve cover gasket.  I will know for sure tomorow, let's hope it's easy peasy.  If so a cruise to the west end for a visit could be in order.

Thanks again for the input and offer of help.
