Front fender=fork brace on '78 cb750k?
« on: August 31, 2008, 09:15:33 AM »
I painted my lowers yesterday and rode home from the shop without the front fender. I noticed quite abit of roughness in the handling.

Does the fender work as a brace as well? I'm going to run it anyway, but was just curious as I've seen some fenderless cb's out there.

Yeah I bet....
I would definitely ride in any twisties, or do any hard turning maneuvers at high speeds without one.

If you want to go fender less, you can buy fork braces. Or if you have the  material/machines/skills to make one.

Beware of Local regulations concerning fenders though.
Where I live(utah) a front fender is required, but the term fender is not properly described, so a shortened fender would probably work.

For a quick-and-dirty fork brace you can drill out the fender rivets and just use the bracket.

Okay, I guess I'm confused- how are the Japanese running their bikes without braces? Different forks?

I don't run a brace on my 77550k. There's a 50/50 view on this topic. I get low through some serious turns at speed and have had NO issues on stock suspension without it.

I have a fenderless '76 550 cafe and have no issues. There was a pretty heated debate on this last month.

I doubt anyone is riding those show bikes to work or abusing them in the twisties. It's subjective, what one rider thinks is dangerous another might not notice at all. I bought a bike witha 130 tire on the back, I know it's supposed to handle wierd and wear funny. I didn't know that until I read it.

Hey Kev  - what part of Aus are you? I'm out by Lake Travis.  Some great roads out here if your bike is road ready.

Don't confuse show with go...... ;)

No, there's the ones that understand that it is a brace and adds deflection  resistance to the front end and those that deny it for whatever reason they choose to believe. It is not the absolute best or strongest brace but it braces the forks against movement so its a brace...  90/10 would be closer
