Said he had been getting a lot of calls of people insuring them like me.

In as little as 1 year ago I could find 550s and 750s from craigslist or whoever.  Now they are few and far between.  I got lucky this month and picked up 3 from one guy.  I know that is not going to happen again for a looooong time.  They have all been snatched up!

We should keep this in mind as the days of a bike that once sold for maybe $100 (if that) can now fetch $500 easy.  Supply and demand!

And the price of parts for these bikes has risen also.  Some of this stuff looks like it was pulled out of a swamp.  But the sellers act like they are near NOS.  :o

No kidding.  At least places like this forum are available where people can network and trade/swap/buy parts at a reasonable price.

Haris - I too just bought three from one guy.  They are still out there, you may have to go outside your area to find them.

The going rate in Maine has climbed to the point of insanity.  I have been looking for months.  Everyone thinks their farm fresh CB550/750 is worth 1500-3,000 ... To make things worse the guys who are finding the deals are hoarding them.  More power to them because I know the work that goes into finding the diamonds in the rough... BUT it sucks for me, because I see a warehouse with 100+ bikes just sitting there.  None of these bikes are for sale.  What's a guy to do?
" Why does anyone get offended by what someone does to their own bike? I dont get it. "

You made me think about it after I cheered knowing someone else would like to know what these control freaks are up to.
Every time any owner strips whatever precious Honda part the horrified purists parts go up in value. That's not the part that bothers them.
What bothers them is they sat up late at night, their breast full of wonder and estrogen, unable to sleep, dreaming about their lovely darling and all her glory... and next thing you know someone else doesn't share their emotional deluge and their reaction is they must spread their mind museum as far as they possibly can, taking over as much of the real world as possible.

Yeah they are getting hoarded too, that's a good point.

According to the insurance guy people are insuring them and riding them, that would definitely take a lot of the beater/fixer-uppers off the market.

You should see the prices of these bikes in Australia :/

I don't think I've seen a cb550 on ebay for less than 1500. almost all needing full restoration

Holy smokes, that's unbelievable.  Is that what they are ASKING on ebay or what they are getting?

What do they go for in the real world like craigslist (think you have that in Australia)

Wowsers!  I think the US was a much bigger market so there are a lot more of these bikes still around.  We don't see prices anywhere near that here!

  • So, what do ya wanna talk about today?
And that's why so many guys here in Oz and in Europe etc are buying bikes cheap from the US and importing them back into their countries. What Milo didn't mention is that because we have a 365 day per year riding season, most of our old bikes are just worn out, so a low mileage US bike that sells for a fraction of what we'd have to pay for a tired old POS locally is very, very attractive! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I used to pick-up racks of 550 carbs for $20-25. Not anymore. Glad I have a shelf full of them.

Yeah, good pickup mate. When I was a kid at the Bairnsdale tech school in the early 1970's there were several sectioned pommy bike engines including a Vincent engine. The school is all but gone now, and so has all the stuff from the Mech A room, but no-one knows what happened to those engines? I hope they didn't go in the scrap bin?  :'(

I feel your pain. I spent a lot of time looking for a new project. I don't think the cafe racer craze has helped prices in our favor either. Everyone thinks their rusty crap is worth a lot of money because there is always a dope out there who has the money to pay (in the US anyway, and especially in hotter markets-East and CA).

You just have to wait until that dope decides that he can't finish that project that's been sitting in his garage for a couple years. We've got loads of these in the midwest if you're willing to travel.
