New tire mounted....wheel won't spin.
« on: June 08, 2012, 09:42:46 PM »
Hey all, this is my first post here, although I've been learning a ton from the site and reading it for a while.  This week, I got a new set of Avon Roadriders in the mail for my 1975 CB550k.  I pulled the wheels off of my bike, and dropped them off at a local shop to have the new tires and tubes mounted.  When I went to reinstall, I noticed that the wheel doesn't spin.  At all.

I loosened the front axle nut, and the wheel spun freely, but when I torque it down, nothing.  After doing a search here, I started to look more closely, and saw that the speedometer gearbox doesn't seem to be laying flush against the rim, there's a little up and down motion as if it's hanging up in the center.  I then took a look at the gearbox retainer, and instead of having two knockouts for the gearbox to engage with, it's got...well, almost 4.  It's like the indents are stepped, and there are burrs on the outside of the retainer.

My questions for you knowledgable folks are:

1:  Does a tire shop pull the axle out to balance a new tire?

2:  If so, and they didn't line up the speedo gear properly, but still torqued the axle nut to spec, would it make the tire not spin?  My guess is that the 'stepping' on the indents is because the speedo gear was almost lined up, and the tightening of the axle nut forced the gear into the retainer.

3: Should the speedo box be completely flush against the rim with no wiggle room?

4: Should I take the whole wheel back to the shop and #$%*?

Thanks for the help!!

Sounds like they messed you up.  I'd let them know about it if it was me.

the spacers or even the axle nut have been installed wrongly,,take the wheel off and either take it back or fix it your self,,youll need to post some pictures of the axle and spacers etc so someone can see whats wrong.

with the wheel off the bike the axle should spin in the hub,,if it dose your front calper might be mis cued?or is the tyre fouling the front fender?

I don't think so you probably have something put back together wrong. Like Dave said show some pics.

OK guys, here are some pics.  My guess is this: I brought the wheel into the shop with the axle on.  They pulled it out to balance the tire, and when they reassembled it, didn't line up the speedo gear box tangs with the indents on the retainer.  He torqued the axle nut down, and created the widened out holes and burrs you see in the pic.  Everything spins fine until I torque that axle nut past hand tight, then it's all bound up.

Does this theory make sense?

I tried to show in the pics that the gear box isn't able to fit flush against the mating surface on the wheel, hopefully you can see that well enough.

So, I'm not sure what to do now.  Ideas?

Your pictures illustrate why I seldom (as in never) have someone else work on my stuff.  The burrs on the flange may be fixed by moving what displaced metal that you can back to where it is supposed to be, then dressing it off.  It should not be a problem if some metal is missing.  Get rid of the burrs and see if the drive will seat with the two splines on the drive lined up with the notches.  I hope they didn't mess up your speedometer drive.  Once you get it seated, you should be able to rotate the drive on the hub and see if the cable driver is turning.  Good luck.

Yes, I actualy did that to myself years ago. Didn't line up the tangs with the notches and just cranked it down. i don't remember if that locked up the wheel. It made 2 half size notches almost 90d from the original full size notches. But something made me fix it.  :D

Just remember when you do fix it, the housing of the drive doesn't touch anything. It is held away from the wheel just a skosh by the internal spacer which is part of the "spacer stack".

I'm the same way, with a few exceptions.  I don't do my own tires, I've never had luck at it and it's easier to pay someone.  I guess that I should have pulled the axle out before bringing it in, but I never thought of it.

Thanks for the advice, all.  I'll see about dressing the displaced metal and getting everything put back together, then will report back!  :)

They probably lost the front wheel spacer.
It is about 1 inch thick.

Better go back there and get them to find it.

Or it is in your vehicle laying on the floor or its on the ground by your driveway or between the shop and where you parked.

I hope you did not bend your front forks tightening it down with no spacer.

Not to worry, the spacer is there!  And I definitely wouldn't have torqued down the front forks if they didn't line up properly.

That's not a bad idea....will definitely be heading back up there Monday morning.   >:( >:( >:(

I took the wheel apart again and filed down the deformed metal, and took off the burrs.  She went back together without a hitch.

Thanks for the advice, guys!!  I can't wait to see how the new Avons feel out on the road.   8)

Good for you!  8)

We made the mistake of taking one of our CL350s to a shop for the tire change over and they messed with all kinds of stuff, put a tiny tube up front and a huge one in the back, neither tire was balancing correctly and gave me a tank slapper at anything over 20mph. We ended up pulling them apart, seeing the tubes were totally wrong, the balance weights were way too much... put in correct sized tubes, pulled off the weights, mounted them, added Dyna Beads for balancing and they have been great ever since. I went back in there with the crap tubes in hand, the owner got pissy, threw my tubes in the trash, and basically threw me out. Wouldn't give my $$ back so I posted a nasty for him, everywhere I could. I think it pissed him off the most that I pointed out that a couple of chicks who never changed a tire ever, just watched a video on youtube and got it right when his own "trained" douchebags couldn't. Sometimes, you just gotta do stuff yourself.  ;D
