End of an Era ( Machine shop auction)
« on: June 10, 2012, 05:05:58 PM »
Any of my limited knowlege of manufacturing and machining is from here.  The Christian Academy next door virtually has a blank check for buying the property, and so now it is time for the owners to retire.

Inspections are business hours Mon-Wed this week and the sale is on Thursday at a  different location- done  live auction on a 12 ft video screen and online.

What do you need to make?  Here are the tools to do it.

Yeah, my friend was a brand new employee on a brand new hitachi CNC thirty years ago or more.

They had a few lean years recently where they were short on work, and  there was always speculation that the owner would finally retire.  The property sold, and so goes the stuff, too.

They had no ongoing contracts, just piece work and re-orders.  They were going to let them stay and finish out contracts but there were none to speak of.

Lots of cool stuff to be dispersed- entropy  hits home.

Lots of stuff will be left undone but I guess there will be other machines [already.]

The optical comparitor is really cool, we were going to make comparative images of all my hashed out floats from 350f's to post on the forum.  Might have been something cool to show and tell.

There's one just like that in our Machine Shop at work.  It's interesting that it's still just as useful as a digital replacement.
(In fact, most of that equipment looks a lot like the stuff we have at work, old but perfectly serviceable.)
I lust after one of those Bridgeport mills.

The metro-Detroit area was covered in small machine shops (We called them alley shops) back in the day.  Our standard work week was 58 hours.  Mostly all gone now.  Cheaper to buy from overseas.   :(

I guess today will be my last day to go walk around ant take a couple pics.  I guess it's not all crowded in, but prolly 80x 160 and just to the point of full  with working room.  I think the water jet is the newest thing in there, not sure , but about 10 or 12 YO..

And yeah, the old stuff works fine, if not even more dependable. Bridgeport is all you need for most things the size of inside a MC engine.

This was just the Christian Academy next door wanted the real estate, bought the ground out from under them. It was always a question as to how the owners would retire.  I'm sure the new shop will get many of the customers and orders. Same people , same machines, made thousands of parts for the customers already.

Yep, people build tools that make better tools that make better tools.  I work in the semiconductor industry and it's the same way.
