Long term 77' cb550F project bike
« on: June 10, 2012, 11:27:39 PM »
I decided to start a build thread for the next bike I'm working on because I'll probably have a billion questions and this site is a rad resource. I've got a 77' cb550f that I've started collecting parts for. I'm gonna try and post pictures whenever I have updates to the build, but I can't promise it will be often. Here is the bike I'm working with:

I bought it off my neighbor last summer, it runs good but has a lot of miles on the engine (not sure how many exactly). I've got a parts engine and a couple boxes of extras. To start, I'm gonna rebuild the engine and carbs. I've got all the parts I will need, just need some time. The only engine upgrades that are for sure is a cb650 cam swap from this beast:

Its a cb650 engine i stole out of a complete non running bike i scored on craigslist for 200$, already sold the rest of the bike for 150$ (got the tach too).
I also plan on porting the head while I'm in there but I'm gonna keep it simple in regards to the engine upgrades.

Also committed to doing a set of r6 forks/brakes too (thansk to FunJimmy for the idea and awesome build thread/guide). Got the parts off ebay in January (good time of year for buying used parts for cheap). I think I paid 250$ for the forks, brakes, rotors, bars, triples and hand controls.

I was too concerned about the triple offset of the r6 on the cb550. Using the r6 triples on the cb550 will add high speed stability, but I want to keep a closer to stock handling set-up. In order to do so I need some triples with more offset (like the stock cb550's). So i've decided to take on what will be a time consuming machining process and make my own triples from this stuff:

Using this stuff:

After almost a year of craigslist wheelings and dealings I've got an awesome old 1950's 10" Logan lathe, a decent little 80's bench top milling machine, a pile of tooling and a couple welders. I love craigslist.
I'm getting close to having the offset dialed in using an autocadd like program:

Mag wheels have also grown on me, Morris wheels would be rad, but too expensive and hard to find (especially in wider sizes). So I'm using a set of kz1000 wheels (I read somewhere that they are morris replicas or knock offs or something like that). I'm gonna go 18" front and either 18" or 17" rear with disc brakes. I've already made an adapter for the front wheel to the r6 forks, gotta get a free weekend to make the other:

I'm also planning on a rear swing arm swap with an early model gsxr 750 and new shocks, I've got a lead but don't have the parts yet. I gotta figure all the geometry stuff out, but so far I think I'll be able to keep everything close to stock geometry.

In the end I want to end up with a sort of street tracker style bike. I know the popular thing to do with these Japanese fours is the cafe look, but I want to do something a little different (and not being able to ride 2-up is a pain). I haven't seen too many 4's turned into street or dirt track style bikes, but I love the look of all the xs650's and other twins in that vein so I'm gonna see where it takes me.

Thanks for reading, I swear i'll try and update this.

Stole the cam out of the 1980 cb650 engine i have, checked all the tolerances and everything is well within wear limits.

Is there anything else I should steal from this motor? If not, i have a 1980 cb650 engine minus a camshaft and ignition plate for sale in the Portland Oregon area. Its going in the classified area too.

yes, get the tach gear from the 650.

i read somewhere to swap cam sprocket between 650 and 550 - use cam sprocket from 550 on 650 cam.

a lot of what you're taking on here are things I'd love to tackle on an upcoming project - I also have a set of cast wheels I'm adapting to a 500/4 and hope to do a front end swap for that bike. Also looks like you've done better in the portland craigslist tools section than I have - I'll be turning to ADX (if you're familiar) for mill, lathe, and welder access. Thanks for documenting your project.

Just got back from my HWY 101/1 moto trip from Portland to San Francisco, it was awesome. If anyone hasn't done that drive, make it happen. It was a long way on cb125's but the twisty sections definitely made me want to keep my 125 after feeling like it was gonna go as soon as I got home. Just gotta fix a few things that broke on the trip and that baby will be purring...

Rad little motorcycle shop in Point Arena. Guy helped me weld my broken shift lever back together so I could get out of 3rd gear.

I'll hopefully be doing that one-way from LA to Portland next week! Bravo on doing that one a 125. Super rad.

It says 626cm on the front of it, and the vin looks like it matches with the cb650's SOHC (RC03E-2112299) 1980 CB650? Are the cams from the cb650's SOHC all the same? I thought I read somewhere that there were 2 different versions. I measure the lobes at appx. 35.35 and 35.67

Can you put 650 barrels on a 550 crankcases and use a 550 head? Seems to defeat the purpose. Does it say 650 on the crankcase?

Got my rear swing arm and wheel, just need the rear brake and I can start figuring that stuff out. Gotta figure out the best way to shorten that thing. I might cut a section out and reweld it, if it was a bit longer i could just hack the end off and cut new axle slots but its a bit too short for that. Any genius ideas out there? I've seen people shorten it at the front, but that seems like waaaay more work than shortening it at the rear. I'll have to cut the cross brace back too, but that's relatively easy.

Also spent a bunch of time making my other wheel adapter

now the front kz wheel is mounted to the r6 forks and ready to go. Gotta start the new triples this week. The used rotors i got off ebay are bent, of course. How bent it too bent? Also got rid of my 650 engine this week, gave the guy that tach because he needed it, i kinda want to go with a smaller electronic one anyway.

Anyone know what the stock offset on the cb550 is? I've measure it myself, but if anyone has a number of their own or one from a manual, that would rule.

I've been staying busy with summer activities and working on my triple trees. I still have to press a steering stem into the lower tree, but other than that and some more milling on the top tree they're getting super close to being done:

I started rebuilding my engine and I have a few questions that people can hopefully weigh in on.

1. Rockers: All my rockers are worn evenly and are smooth without any pitting. In my manual it says to check for "end play" with the arms. The rockers move back and forth on the rocker arm shaft a bunch but that seems normal (I can't imagine they used to be tight considering how much play there is now). What do they mean by end play? There doesn't seem to be any slop in the rockers when I try and 'twist' them on the shaft.

Valves/Valve Guides: Are you supposed to measure the slop with the valve guide seals on or off? When they're on the valves seem pretty solid, but when they're off there is definitely some slop, mostly on the exhuast side of things. I think I'm gonna go ahead and replace the exhaust valves and guides, the intake side feels pretty solid. I was going to replace the intake valves without the guides because I found a deal on some valves, and figure it can't hurt, any reason not to do that?

Splitting the Case: I was planning to split the crankcase, but once I got the oil pan off I could see inside a lot better. My primary chain is nice and tight, all of the sprockets look good, I've never had any oil leaks from the crankcase. I don't see any reason I need to split the case, just seems like a lot of extra work I don't need to do, am I right?

Pisonts: My cylinders are well within wear limits
58/51mm. My pistons are a bit worn 58.42mm, but they look decent.
I've got some pistons from my spare motor that are less worn at 58.45, but they have some vertical scratches, should I swap them or just keep running the current ones?

Been dedicating a lot of time to the project, but things still move slowly. Made my new tail loop yesterday, its getting close to being completed. Just gotta weld a few more things and then weld it to the frame. Also made my electronics box, just need to figure out what I'm doing for a battery and how to simplify the wiring harness to fit more easily:

Also made my shock mounts for the swing arm, Anyone in the Portland area have a welder that can do 3/16" aluminum. My tig welder is maxed out at that thickness (180amps) and I want to make sure it penetrates 100%. Would be willing to pay someone to do it for me too... Anyone?

Ordered some new Hagon shocks too, but haven't got them yet. Just need to get some new tires, chain and exhaust tubing and then I think I will have finally spent all the money I need to in order to get this project done (this things is getting kind of expensive).

The bike is looking great.

Touche on the triples.
They're one tough item to fab up at home, that's quite the accomplishment.

Considering your fabrication skills, you should consider installing a 650 primary chain tensioned.
I'm also partial to the 650 aluminum points cover.
Sorry this comes after you off loaded the 650 mill.

Cheers

I was going to use Kawasaki mags for my build too but back out because it seemed like it'd be too much trouble... You've inspired me to give it a try sometime. Bike looks awesome, looks fast just sitting there.

Project is still alive, I've had a bunch of life stuff going on. Gotta move my shop to my new house, gonna be a while before I can get back to this thing.

Anyone in the Portland Area know house wiring? The garage at my new house doesn't have electricity, need to run a sub-panel to the garage. Anyone have those skills, kinda broke for a while, can trade for....???
