74 cb550. build ,refresh, learning.
« on: June 10, 2012, 11:41:25 pm »
Ok. I'll start by saying im a terrible typer.this is not the beginning of this bikes build. is was originally built by  freindof mine like 8 or 9 years ago intoa nice bike, but time and changes of hands have taken a toll on it. I have had it now for a seas and a half. i will try to get picks of the orginal build and upload what i did the start. So now i want to do the bike some justice. i want it to be nice again. and to run right. this will be a slow build as my fiancail limitations but u do what i can when i can. any advice would be helpful. thx

This is what it looked like for a while in my dads yard. when i got it it had no front end or exhaust. It was not wired, no bars no controls, and hadnt ran in a few years.. this pic is after a good freind(james ross) helped me get it together.

and this pic is of it the way i rode it for a season.between pics i learned how to and cleaned the carbs. wired the bike with all black wire.and done general mait. on it. james ross set my points and helped alot. i ended up with a 03 sporty tank in trade and used it. and got a bag from he local army navy surplus shop. cheapo ergo pods. gs850 coils. ngk plugs. bates style soloseat. mounted it with a door hing and a long bolt with a oversized nut for a spacer. aand scored some exhaust. and the side mount tag/taillightwas a freebie along with a suzuki push pull throttle from james.. side mount needed a new light buy hey it was free lol. so this was fun for a while got alot of attention with me kickstarting it. ppl loved or hated it but i loved it. too bad it smoked and wasnt reliable..btw the other pic is the first time i rode it. it was the rally on the river and i worked all morning to get it to go and stop then repeat lmao. in the background is dads place and my other project

So my next part is collecting parts. i got a set of drag pipes(used)and a rebel fender in the mail. got a cool grenade taillight. and when the money gets saved up going for uni filters.(with i had a airbox when i got it). got 125 jets for it. and also when the money is avalible im going to buy a set of adjustible clipons. ill get some pics of my small workspace soon. and motorwise im going for a 605 bigbore it may have been a 600 (got the link saved ) and a 650 cam useing the 550 sprocket.. any advise on anything would be helpful. the paint with be a kaiki rhinoliner on the ttins and details and a black frame.the word recon across the tank in a black stencil. A slightly diff take on the whole army theme. hopeing to get a hondaman igintion module soon to. lol

Thanks its a 03 sportster tank and a stock frame that was hard tailed but still has the swingarm. its odd but i like the lies better than a hardtail pipe kit. this pic shows the hardtail better.

Hmm...I actually like the lines of this more than any cb hardtail I've seen.  You say it's the stock swingarm hardtailed into place?

Also on a funny sidenote two days ago i was riding my other bike a stock83 shadow 500 home from work at 230 am and ramped a large possum... def thought i was going to eat a asphalt dinner. got good air. i was rolling about 65 when it ran out  in front of me and swerving wasnt an option. Also lost the battery side cover on the hard landing. LMAO.

So last night i made a trip to walmart and bought a T brace and a support brace  for wood. in the little area in hardware were the wood srews and similar items are... drew up a diagram in a note book and bent cut and drilled out to make it. then added some quicksteel to the plate holder(idk what it is from). now when i get some money ill buy two boltts and nuts to put it together. and take out the rivets lol
aslo pictured is the bbattery holder.. im going to take it out and make a box to hold the battery electronics and the ignition.all of course when my fiances allow. or if i find any wiggle room in my budget this week.. lmao

Made it to Fastenal today. They had to order the bolts i needed.. Than trip to Lowe's from a piece of flat iron. When Monday rolls around I'm going to try to get the struts in place if i have time.  Was thinking may go back to Lowe's and buy some corner braces and another piece or two of flat iron and build a rack and sissy bar that i can take down and store in the bag on the side of the bike, just a thought at this point.

Due to my work hours making a sudden jump and life being life... Hectic and unpredictable i haven't had alot of time to work on the bike. But i did finally source a 6 over swingarm i local machine/fab shop agreed to build one. One of about 15 i called but only one was willing to take on the job. Going to be getting my plans and measure measurements together for a 6 over dresda style arm soon.
