1980 CB650C choke not fully engageing.
« on: June 13, 2012, 03:39:04 PM »
Hey, I'm just getting started on a project bike. Its been sitting around 10+ years, but does start and run. What I am seeing is pulling the choke knob (or even where it attaches to the carbs directly) the choke butterflies aren't closing the last 1/4 of the way. If I push the butterflies closed they stay closed until you hit the throttle but then pop to full open or 3/4 closed if the choke is on. Anyone seen this before?

it sounds like the choke mechanism  at the carbs has the spring installed incorrectly, or over the years it's gone out of whack. if you do a search on here, you'll find that there is a big high def picture of the setup. study it and make sure your spring is set up the same. it's a bit finiscky and kind of a pia.

the same issue happens to me when i take apart the carbs and put them back together.

also, if it isn't the springs, the butterflies can bind in the carb body preventing the whole thing from closing. you can take the butterlies off and reposition them.

carbs will likely have to come off for all of this.

as Dave said above. another thing to watch for is are the carbs all seated into the "holding rack" ( sorry don't know what it's called)
the big plate the carbs screw to. if they aren't sitting flush with it, this results in an uneven strain on the choke linkage.

Hey guys thanks for the tips, I will go through the pics and see what mine looks like when I have the bike infront of me.  I did go through the carbs and split them into pairs. As far as I know they are screwed down full seated and the spring is on there although I did originally forget to reconnect that. (which caused the 2 butterflies to move only)
