Topic: Dyna beads for tire balancing?

I need my tires mounted/balanced on my spoke wheels. Doesn't seem like that's going to be such an easy task and the shops that the retailer I bought from want like $50 a wheel? That's ridiculous. I searched about DIY balancing then that lead me to this product called "dyna beads". It's just beads you pour into the tire (or inner tube) and supposedly self balances the tire. Does anyone use these or is it a joke?

I dunno, but I used an automotive sticky one for a mag wheel. seemed to work.

i think harbor freight has a wheel balancing kit for motorcycles.

Does anyone know of a good shop in my area? Northeast Ohio....Canton, Akron, Cleveland lol I'll pay a reasonable price for them but not no stinkin $50 a tire

It is this simple people.

Get your wheel off of the ground.
Spin the wheel. Eventually it will stop with the heaviest side on the bottom.

Add a wheel weight or a piece of solder wrapped around the spoke 180º from the bottom.

Spin the wheel again ,repeat process. Finally no matter where you set the wheel it will stay put. It is balanced good enough.

Are you still going to be paying for someone to mount the tires?  If so you may as well have them balance them though 50 a tire sounds a bit steep.  About 30 around here.  I  mounted new tires and tried the home balancing but without the proper equipment it's just not sensitive enough and too much friction to make it reliable unless there is a larger imbalance.  I just let it go, after all there where no weights on the rims when I removed the old OEM tires.  No problems and no vibration so far.  I know of others who have also skipped it though some may not admit it.
You can always mount the tires yourself, it's not that hard but it's easy to ruin a tube.  Do that a few times and you might be better off paying someone else to do it.  Good skill to learn though if you are going out on a road trip.

Local shop wants $35 a tire to mount and balance. I forgot to ask if the price is the same if they have to take the wheels off the bike but it sounds like it is. I asked if he could do any better than that since my wheels are off and ready to go. Don't you think it's fair to ask for a little discount if that is the case?

$35 for mounting/balance is not bad if you removed them.

Things are more expensive here in Sunny Cali,  it was $40 for mount, $85 if they removed them.

To be fair, they did clean up the rust and treat it as part of the deal, including new tape. (without me having to ask for it)

Shoot if i can get tires changed and balaced for $35 a piece I juimp at it. It is $100 bucks here.

I've used 'em and like the beads a lot, both for simplicity and the way they function. Bottom line- you will be hard pressed to find someone who has used the beads who has anything negative to say about them. You'll find lots of people who have never used them who think they are a gimmick.

I think they are pretty cheap. I have read about people just using airsoft BBs (although this won't work with tubes obviously). Dyna says not to use them in cars as there is a lateral component to the balancing (weight on the inside versus outside of the rim) except as a supplement to regular balancing. They have a height/width ratio for which they can be used. The ratio means they are basically for trucks. As I understand it, they are pretty popular among the Jeep/offroad crowd (wheels take a lot of pounding).

I haven't read of anyone putting them in and having problems. In fact, all I have read has been positive. As an engineer, I always like to understand a product and convince myself it isn't snake oil. All of the data I read seemed to make sense and the physics seems sound. I probably wouldn't do it if I was racing. YMMV I'm sure.

By the way, can anyone tell me what the best oil for my engine/best needle+jet settings for my pods are?

Just had both of mine done.  Dismount, mount, balance, new valve stem, and got rid of old tires for me.  $72.

All the Harley guys around me use the beads. I just had new tubes, tires installed and the guy that mounted them put the beads in. Have about 65 miles on them, I must say no complaints, pretty smooth..

That dyna beads thread was hilarious. I don't really want to resurrect that but I will say I have a very good snake oil detector from my work in the audio field. There are so many snake oil audio products. Anyways I don't know about the beads, it truly doesn't seem like much hard testing has gone into them.

I dropped my wheels off at the shop tonight for the $70+ mounting     Hopefully they at least come back balanced well. If not, they will hear about it. They claim to work on everything but they seemed to be a mostly harley shop, judging by the lack of anything non-harley related and the side of the building saying something like "working on american iron since 1972"  . I was going to joke "You're giving me harley prices here I need honda prices"

I feel sorry for you that you cannot mount your own tire.

Many videos online that show you how, and all you need is two tire spoons.

I am 63 and still change my own tires, since I was taught when i was 16. Has not changed.

Yeah. I could have done it. I'm just at the point where I want to get this thing done quickly and with as least amount of hassle from here. I've worked on everything else on the bike including rebuilding the motor and I also straightened the wheels out myself (half the spokes on the rear wheel were loose) so I'll let them do the tires

$70 for two wheels is a damn good price. Of you have not dome it before it is a #$%*. Of they are old tires that are hard as rocks it is a double #$%*.

I replaced swing arm bushings and head bearings new tires high speed balance and still had a bounce on my 78 F3. Used Dyna Beads running smooth I even took off all the wheel balance weights.
