Gas Gauge fuel cap question
« on: June 12, 2012, 09:44:32 AM »
Hey folks. the 1975 750 k I just picked up has what appears to be a factory upgrade fuel gauge. The window has ambered over but I was able to remove it and it appears the needle still works when the bobber mechanism goes up and down. Any ideas on how I might get a new cover for this dial or better yet make one? Here's a pic.

Not factory. Occasionally see these on eBay. They don't work very well and are noisy. the float bangs around (I've been told, not first hand).

PS: ebay: 5 for $99. The real special one is $349.  ::)

I've always felt the best "fuel gauge" was the trip odometer, provided one has one that is functioning.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

i'm with bob on this one the odometer is your best gas gauge. i have the same one as yours and it doesn't work at all when your tank was getting low it would clang around in the tank that was the only indicator i was getting low on fuel.when my odometer shows a 150 miles it's time to find a gas station.
I've done a lot of things in my life that I'm not proud of...and the things I AM proud of, "are disgusting"

Get rid of it.
Get a new cap.

When you hit reserve stop and the first gas station you get to.

Not the second one.

I'll give you that. And I'm a gadget whore. But that one just doesn't make the cut for me, in that it lacks even modest usability. When I'm on a long enough trip for it to matter, I'm using a tank bag which would cover it up.

I think they look neat too but they really don't work that well.

I think they're plastic too. I remember those from back in the 70's.
JC whitney used to sell them for around $14.00 or so.

You have one of the originals from back in the 70's. They are going for some $$$ on eBay. I sold a used one 2 years ago for $120 and it was also missing the clear face cover. I always rely on the trip set for my gas gauge. My own personal opinion is those caps looks a bit bulky on the tank. Sell yours and you can by like 4 new gas caps that are not pitted.
