I think I count without thinking about it most of the time. I will sometimes look for that phantom gear just to make sure.

 Havent run a speedo in 3 years, so I have to count, if I had a speedo, I'd know what gear I am in...

Funny I've had this thought a few times while riding, usually lasts about one shift, then its gone.  I just keep an eye on the tach.

I lean waaay over and look at the little numbers on the side of the case, just to be sure...

I generally only keep track (count?) when decelerating, down shifting.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

i usually count on the way up but when coming to a stop i stomp on the shifter about 10 times... i have seen and heard of alot of accidents were the bike is going to take a left across traffic and is in second and stalls and gets hit by a car
