Strange front master cylinder rebuild kit
« on: June 14, 2012, 11:07:18 AM »
Hi y'all.  I'm usually on the Kawasaki Triple boards, but am happy to be restoring my '74 CB750K to running condition. It's a rust-free original with 9K miles on it.  Doesn't need much.  Currently rebuilding the front brakes, and was really happy to be able to get the dreaded master cylinder circlip out in less than 10 minutes thanks to the tips here (a slightly curved pick did the trick).  Inside was nasty but not too bad.

Was sooo pleased that the M/C rebuild was going to smoothly until I opened my rebuild kit.  It's been sitting on my shelf since around '06, built by "Tour Max".  Check out this part?  What the heck...just a bad kit right?  The main plunger is definitely one piece...there is no way to get the seal on there.  Anyone seen anything like this before? Or maybe I am having a twilight zone moment and it is possible to make it work.   :o

Use a bit of clean brake fluid around the seal and it should slip right on...Larry

...with gloves. DOT 3 is pretty toxic stuff.

If all else fails ... Consider the genuine Honda master cylinder rebuild kit, part number: 45530-377-305. Kit comes with part numbers 2 thru 9 in the diagram below. Same kit I used in my 750 K4 brake rebuild, fits and works just fine. Cost is around $35, give or take.

Even with the Honda kit you will have to fit that seal over the shaft. Not a big deal. Good luck with it.
