Removing Covers & Chain Adjustment Screw Question - First Post!
« on: October 12, 2015, 06:37:29 AM »
Hi everyone.  Been lurking awhile to learn and started working on my new to me CB750K4.  It's my first post but I'm looking forward to getting more involved.  I apologize for such basic questions, but here you go.

1.  Should the chain adjustment screw touch the rear axle to make sure that the adjustment remains fixed (even with tightening of axle castle screw)? My rear axle nut came off when riding (luckily I pulled over quickly enough) thanks to a PO that didn't use a pin and for some reason didn't tighten the lock nut enough so that over time it came loose!!!!  I've since replaced the pin and nut and put it all back together and adjusted the chain tension but not after taking a nice chunk out of my sidewall from the chain guard.  >:(  In any event, I'm going to switch back to the stock wheel size (the PO put on a 16" Harley rim).

2.  My starter clutch springs, pins and rollers need replacing and I'm going to replace my transmission cover with another cover (no chrome just polished aluminum).  I assume that since the majority of oil is held in the oil tank with the dry sump system I don't need to drain the oil but just wanted to confirm.

Thanks!  This site is great and I'm just digging in and fixing what some of the strange and scary things the PO has done.

Welcome.

1.  Yes, it should rest against the axle.

2. Do you mean the clutch cover on the R side? If yes, some oil may come out.

I would do a "nut and bolt check" on that entire bike!

Thanks!  Actually, I was actually going to replace the L side cover (transmission/sprockets) next to Stator cover.  And absolutely yet, I'm going through the bike top to bottom checking every nut and bolt.  Very scary.

Oh....no oil will leak when removing the shifter and front sprocket covers.  You will need a replacement gasket for the shifter cover.

BTW - do you have an impact driver to loosen the screws?

Yes, picked up an impact driver for the screws.  I figured oil would leak, but is it so much I should drain the oil tank?  I just changed the oil a few weeks ago.

I haven't tried with the oil tank leaked empty into the engine (the cutoff valves do tend to leak a bit), but that cover will be well above oil level if the oil is in the tank. A few dribbles may come out.

Yes the adjuster screws on the rear axle should be in contact. The main axle bolt is not sufficient.

The axle adjuster screws don't get near the axle. They push against the removeable block. Bolted across the end of swingarm. Are those in place?

Yes, they are. That's actually why I asked.  When moving the adjusting bolts closer to the axle the alignment was adjusting so I went back and adjusted to proper alignment and left screws where they were - which is not touching the axles.  I then torqued the castle bolt to spec and inserted the pin.  All seems good but without the screw touching the axle isn't it at least possible for the alignment to shift?

Yes.

Sorry - Yes, it's possible to throw out the alignment?  Doesn't seem like a smart design if that is the case.

I was not clear there. Use the bolts to pull the axle back under slight tension, then they should stay tight against the removable end piece, while torqueing axle nut.
If axle nut is torqued...nothing should move. As long  as all correct parts are in there. If axle adjusters are too thin, wrong thickness washer.. Things like that happen the nut can bottom on the threads, and not be clamping wheel/swingarm properly.. Hope that helps.

Perfect!!  Totally makes sense.  I now see how it all locks in place.  Thanks 754.
