Moving to Missouri
« on: May 25, 2012, 09:23:11 AM »
This is good and yet not so good news.

My wife and I have been living apart since late 2008 due to jobs in my industry (building controls, mostly new construction) moving out of Calif.  We figured it wouldn't take her more than a year to find a job in Las Vegas (software support) which is were I was.  Well now, I've been working in St. Robert Missouri for the last 9 months due to work drying up in Vegas.  I do fly back to Calif twice a month to see my wife and kids (6-yours, mine and ours) company paid but now it's time to move to Missouri.

They love me out there on the Controls-Upgrade / Facility Wide Systems Integration Project and there will be much more work coming along, and there is NO xwork in California, Nevada, Arizona, Oregan......

I am still paying rent on a house is Vegas that I've been to ONCE in the last 9 months and MY BIKES ARE THERE!  I wonder if I've forgotten how to ride???

The last of two roommates in Vegas is moving out June 6th and there will be no one to take care of my dogs..........it's time to get out.

So I start hauling dogs and bikes June 8th to my sister-in-laws place in the Missouri Ozarks.  She has 25 achres with a house that we will rent and then maybe assume payments of.  And then the company pays (maybe) to move everything else latter that month?

The not so good news and further unknows.

Can my wife find a job out there in a decent amount of time?

Once this project is complete, end of September, and I move on to other projects in Central Missouri, I won't be taking those twice a month flights back to Calif and the thought of not seeing my 4 boys is twisting me up inside.  But if I don't, they and their mom won't get the child support they need and my wife and I won't get out of debt (taxes mainly).

So, who's out in the Ozarks that I could meet up for a ride with?

That is actually where I am relocating back to as well. I was stationed on the Fort leonard wood for a long time up there and now am heading back trying to find some work in the motorcycle industry.

As for your with finding a job you may want to consider looking at usajobs.gov wich would put her in a position working as a gov't employee doing what she does. That would be your best bet other than just calling around and finding places.

recently the census has included fort leonard wood into the count for St Robert and Waynesville MO so they are rapidlly expanding the community there may be some opportunities in there somewhere.

Wow, maybe we'll run into each other some time.

My wife had looked at usajobs.gov but could not find anything in her line of work.....so far.  We know the fort is expanding.  There is new construction all over and our salesteam keeps finding new buildings going onto the bid list.

I prefer my riding boots and leather jacket when I'm home. That area of MO posses some of the best motorcycle roads from travelling old route 66, around lake of the ozarks, and down through the Ozark National Forest. It's a wonderful place to own a motorcycle.... for 6 months out of the year.

How far will you be to NW AR? That area has a decent job market. JB Hunt, Tyson, Wal-Mart headquarters are all there. Also, if you look at the NW Arkansas Breakfast Club thread on this forum you'll find some fun people to ride with. I'm not sure how close you are to there, but that's the most help I can be. I just moved to Australia from Fayetteville AR, so you just missed me. Good luck!

St. Robert MO is 210 miles from NW AR going thru Springfield and Joplin.....

....and yes, I've been driving the company car around old Route 66 and wishing I had my bikes here already......and getting anxious to finish my CB350FX.

Hey Dan, you keep moving farther away!

Have your wife check out the Rodgers area of AR, plenty of jobs I hear, I have a sister who lives in the area.

Welcome to Missouri from Joplin.

I sure hope your plan comes together with the home in the country with the wife and kids and bikes and all. Im a little biased I guess living my whole life here in Joplin but Im kinda proud of most this area. It sure would be simpler than your current arrangement of flying home all the time and paying multiple rents. Hope it works out for ya.

Get yur bikes home and get established, Im riding to my brothers in the fall north of St Louis and Ill pop in to shake hands.

Now Im off to the shop to finish pullin the 836 motor. Sure wish I had HondaMans book before I did the headgasket last time............Boats   8)

Here's where I could be living in Missouri, near the little town of Eldridge, north of Lebanon.

The House:

The Barn:

The right end of the Barn could make a good wood shop:

And this will be the Motorcycle / Electronics shop.  It's the size of a 3 car garrage:

The grass needs to be mowed, trees cut, wasp & hornets nestst cleared away, etc.
The ride-on mower is in front of the roll-up door behind all that grass.

32 and 72 to salem and some other good ridge riding roads that are fun on a bike.

+1. I've travelled route 66 through Misery a few times to visit a friend that lives in Carthage. ;)

Mapquest says thats only 135 miles from me, within ridin distance when the k8 is back together.

Is that mainly smoke damage on the big barn or is it structurally in trouble? Hope not, thats a great design and Ive always wanted one built like that.

The darker part of the barn is where the sun has not washed out the color due to the shade of the overhang.  The barn is made of Cherry wood: as hard as a rock with no signs of rot.

Finally got around to uploading a few pics I took before driving from Las Vegas to Missouri.

Here's 3 of my 5 motorcycles loaded up.

Here's Star and Misty

We drove to Kingman AZ Saturday afternoon where we meet up with Trish (wife) and Sarah (daughter) at Trish's mom's house to help her pack for moving to Missouri.

We left Kingman Sunday at 3pm and arrived in St. Robert 2:15am Tuesday.

This comming weekend I, and maybe my daughter, get to make the drive again with U-Haul's biggest truck pulling an open trailer (for the last 2 motorcycles).

I lived is Missouri for 8 long years.
I dont know what you want but it is a place you might find yourself biting tongue.
If you like heat and stupitity you will be in heaven.
I miss that part of the country but not enough to  make me want to move back.
Then you have your big cities close by....KC and SL...stay away from both.
I dont know how much you can tollerate but 8 years of the midwest left me looking for a better place.

boatsdickson, my 2 dogs are sisters and they make lousy guard dogs.  They love everybody.

lostmykeys, I've been working here in the Ozarks for a year, so I've experienced the humid heat and the stupidity.  One reason I'm moving here is that there is no work in the South West, another reason is that I'm tired of big cities like Southern California and even Las Vegas (I moved to LV in 2008 for a job) and yet another reason is that this might be the chance for me, my wife and daughter to be together again.....and my wife and I might take over her sister's 25 acres mentioned in my first post.  We'll see how long I can stand it here.  I do love riding thru the country side.

You are in prime floating country if you like canoeing and the outdoors. Lots of caves we explored when we were in school there, I had some geology friends that knew where all the good caves were. Nice, soft limestone rock for rock climbing too.
