This piece looks like something that's been needed for quite a while. Those silly "pods" are really unattractive as a replacement, but this way looks like a much better way to do it, and they even have the required velocity stacks, which the "pods" do not have.

Anyone going to try one?

OK, this will be a tough one: try "CycleX" and look for their super high volume etc....

But just this once, for the people who are already sitting at a computer but don't want to type in CycleX -

That's basically a Henry Abe breadbox redesign that has been around forever. Popular with the chopper crowd. That one, like the old Abe probably uses the stock intake filter box velocity stacks.

"That's basically a Henry Abe breadbox redesign that has been around forever" except that it's about 1/2 the size, doesn't use a foam cleaner element and doesn't have a mesh cover over the cleaner element. The Abe is so small and light it doesn't need any additional support. This one, I'm betting, will. But still a good idea, and probably another 1/2 the filter area of the stock filter element. The nice thing is that it has the velocity stacks, which are the dirty little secret of "pods" - they flow more air but don't necessarily do it in a helpful way with no stacks.

Hope someone tries this soon - I would like to use one on my CB750 "touring" machine.

I wouldn't use one on a touring machine. If it gets really soaked in the rain,much like K&N filters which looks to be the same filtering material,it will usually cause problems. Good for fair weather riding though.

I don't understand this rain business. I had K&N's on my Kawa triple. I ran them for a year and didn't encounter this problem. Yes, it does rain a bit in The Emerald Isle.

Well last year when I ran for awhile with Godzilla on the Michigan leg of the tour with my chopped 750 I hit huge rain,big puddles etc. Pods were soaked and bike was drinking water. Limped in and parked under a gas station roof,turned up the idle to help dry them out some and ended up making an 'airbox' for some protection out of some free car mags at the station to get me home. Wasn't the first episode with real heavy rain for me. Maybe I need to douche them heavier in more oil ?? Glad you have had better luck over there with it.

looks like a 3 inch filter, more area than stock.. should work OK as it has some common area inside it

I had exactly the same thing happen as Ekpent reports happen to me with a stock CB750 with a stock airbox. I'd be willing to posit that a filter as large as this one would be less likely to be waterlogged than pods or a stock airbox...and I doubt it'd need heavier oil. Those pods might, though.

I doubt that even heavy rain could clog K&N pods on a RUNNING BIKE. Sitting overnightin rain or washing may cause starting difficulty or idling problems, but once it warms up, it should run fairly well... Pods with paper element..may be huge problems. I used to get CB 350 filters wet, and they take a llloooonnnnnggg time to dry out..

I spoke to the owner of Cycle x when I was inquiering about a reverse cone for my stock 4 into 1 header, and I asked about this filter setup as it looks interesting, but i was worried about jetting. Right now my bike runs great , like a clock and I hate to mess with that balance... He told me th thought that this setup would either not need jetting changes or require one up on the main and pilots. What do you all think?

Hmm, thick alloy plates. I would have thought chromed pressed steel would have been a better option. Lighter and not needing any support.

Thick alloy plate is what you make them out of if you dont know how many you can sell...if they sell then you can put out the loot for dies to make thin steel ones...

I love it.. if it will fit a 74 550 but the price is WOW.. anyone know of a cheaper alternative?
