The large oval K&N I showed works out to 104 sq. inches. I imagine the filtering membrane would be identical to what you have. I'm sure it's more porous than the paper pleat original but the only one of those I have is from a latter model with PD's & measures only 87 sq inches.

Sorry to take this off the rails Scott, but while it has some attention of the folks here, I'd love to make a break through on a larger airbox for my race engine but keep dropping it out of frustration. There isn't much space because of the stock frame so the design would be mucho complicated. If anyone with more talent than I has an idea, I'm all ears. For now I have dual sock foam filters over delrin stacks which isn't ideal for air flow, but the best approach I could think of to have some filtering.

Does anyone have the filter model of the filter and flange the original poster is showing. I am looking for one for my cb500. K&N only shows their rc8044 or whatever for pod setup.

I have the bracket piece for the CB500 if you're still interested.  You would have to purchase a filter for it separately.

i know K&N no longer makes these, but if you poke around ebay you can luck out. I got mine NOS for about $50 or you could buy the bracket from the above poster and find a filter that can bolt up.

In regards to it getting dirty etc... if you leave it protected between the electric's, battery, side covers, seat, and rear fender it stays pretty clean... I ride my bike through everything and have never had an issue... still looks new, though I have only had it a few months now.

singedebile, did you go to the k&n from the stock setup and if so did you find you had to rejet at all?
I have 2 brackets and will be mounting one of them to my bike...from what I read it seems that I shouldnt need to, just curious if you could give me any review of your experience with yours

I ran the older bigger style K&N TwoTired posted on the previous page this summer and put 1000 miles on my cb550 with no problems. I was hoping it would increase my gas milage like it did for the guy in this articlehttp://www.sohc4.net/index.php/cycle-world-1982-improving-the-cb550-gas-mileage/

It's a pity the search function is not what it was before. I miss the advanced search deerly. Years ago I posted the partsnumbers of an K&N airfilter, specially designed for the 500 and the 550. That filter replaced the airfilterhousing, leaving the plenum in place. I suppose it's long ago that these filters were obtainable. If I had the numbers we could google. From what I've seen back then, it's about the only aftermarket filter that I would give the benefit of the doubt. They looked very similar to the original filter but bigger (and therefore needed the removal of the housing).

Curious if you could take a  part a K&N filter to use the material and retro fit it to an OEM Honda 550 Filter casing? Is the K&N filter in Scott S's post dimensions the same or greater than the width of the honda element?

The word Plenum is not inherent to the automobile or motorcycle industry. Plenum space, enclosed spaces (in buildings) used for airflow. Same thing with the SOHC intake system.

I buy air filter foam and replace the pleated paper with it. Same as a Uni then.

That method is perfect for a GL500 because the foam goes inside a cylinder and vacuum keeps it in place. A lot of crotch rockets are easily done  as well. For the H1 I stitched the foam into a cone shape. Poverty is the mother of invention!

I have decided to get rid of the PODS and goto a setup like this.  I have the airbox housing and am purchasing new rubber boots from Paul Gabor.  I also recently purchased the K&N filter RU-2580 as it was mentioned that this would flow the best for a similar to stock setup.  I have a 1978 CB550K with the PD46C carbs and was curious if anybody has tried this with this setup?  Also, I am obviously going to have to make a bracket that would work....any ideas that would be most effective?

I use a single large K&N like this and it works well. At the time I only had the plenum and no airbox plus a set of these huge GSXR1100 pods. I won't get into any arguments about comparisons with stock. I did try to isolate it as much as possible from wet weather, but it obviously needs to be cleaned more often then a stock set-up, but is also easily removed. I also have three others left as spares!

The filter feeds stock PD carbs on a 592cc engine. The 2.25" inlet opening ultimately would be restrictive for anyone looking for big numbers, but this is a street bike in mild trim. At 51 RWHP though it is certainly doesn't show any ill effects!

Nice installation, B!
That could really help a lot of the 350F/400F/500/550 owners out there, too. It would handily solve the problems (other than the intake noise) caused by trying to use the aftermarket foam filters in the stock airbox. On a street bike, I'd suggest using the smallest K&N that would mount this way, and maybe wrap a piece of plastic tubing over it, too, to make a little more still-air environment. The K&N breathes so easily that passing wind can actually "reach through" the filter and disturb the airflow pattern inside. Those guys who have put the "Filtercharger" on their Mustangs, but removed the surrounding box, know just what I mean. ;)

Someone on here had the 3d printed filter adapter that looks just like that metal one but obviously made out of plastic. I asked him if he'd be interested in making and selling a few but never heard back.

Twistedengineering I sent a PM back, not sure why it never went through?  Ill try to resend it!

Here are pics of the filter adapter I mounted, I can post up the specs later tonight.

Bolts up just as the stock airbox does so it can easily be returned to stock!

It's mounted to my '78 CB550 air plenum, with a K&N RD-0710.  Designed for a 2.5" ID filter, with 3.5" OD body being the max that will fit between the battery and stock electronics.  IIRC the length of this filter is 5.5"

Thanks!
